Depending on the discipline of mountain biking undertaken, the type of mountain bike rims on the bike will either help or harm the rider. For cross-country, freerider and jumping, sturdier, heavier mountain bike rims will help keep the bike in service. However, for some forms of trail riding where less weight and better maneuverability is desired, lighter rims may be a better choice. In most cases the front and back mountain bike rims are matched, not only for appearance but also for stability. A heavier wheel on one end or the other can throw off the balance of the entire bike and cause major problems when performing jumps or tricks on the bike. Choosing mountain bike rims based on the type of riding to be done, is more than a personal choice. It is also necessary to accomplish the ride.

Some mountain cross riders, as well as dirt jumpers may use different types of tires. If they are going to go from one type of riding to another frequently, they will usually have the different tires mounted on different mountain bike rims for quick changes to the second style. One of the aspects of mountain biking is the riders being hard on their bikes. Especially downhill runners who frequently confront jumps and falls, the mountain bike rims are going to take a beating more severe than simply casual riding down the city sidewalks. If the rim cannot withstand the abuse, it will bend in one or more spots making the bike impossible to ride. It can also cause adverse effects to the tire, brake pads and the chain.

Keeping the spokes at the proper tension on mountain bike rims is also important and some riders do this by simply listening. A dull thud when tapped with a screwdriver is an indication the spoke may need tightened. By appropriately adjusting the spokes according to manufacturer specifications, damage to the mountain bike rims can be diminished. Even a slight bend on the edge of the mountain bike rims can create problems if it interferes with the brake pads. Having to jump over a small dimple or protrusion can quickly ruin the pads, making the bike more difficult to stop. Since the mountain bike rims are the one item on the bike that is going faster than everything else, anything that could cause them to come to a sudden, unexpected stop should be repaired or replaced immediately to protect the rest of the bike, including the rider.

26 Mountain Bike Rims
You must be aware that certain things might be useful to an individual but might turn out to be equally dangerous for some other individual like ice-cream, places like Ooty Simla, they might turn to be good for some and an asthma patient may die of them. Same is the case with bike rims. For riders who involve in cross-country, free riding and jumping heavier and sturdier rims work best for service whereas the same do not work or harm the trial riders. Instead the lighter weight rims work best for them.

Some people are creative and wish to match the front and back rims in order to give their mountain bikes the cool and trendy look. While some other wish to keep them only for the purpose that works for them. Make sure to avoid getting incompatible rims. Means don't commit the mistake of getting one wheel heavier than the other. That gets you into extremely dangerous situations when you loose the balance of the bike. As it is stated above one must keep in mind the usage of the bike also.

If you are one among mountain riders who alternate often between different types of riding or if you are mountain cross rider or dirt jumper, don't worry. You can have different rims attached to different bike wheels and cycling and quickly change them as per the requirement as many other experienced riders do the same.

If you are an experienced rider, it's absolutely not required to be stated here that sometimes downhill runners be too hard on their bikes. They end up causing severe abuse to the rims of the bikes. This sometimes results in bending of rim in one or the other direction. This obviously results in damage of tires, brake pads and the chain.

Rims, if maintained properly can withstand long durations and last longer. The best way to maintain them properly is to keep tapping the rim with a screw driver. If you hear a dull thud then it's obvious that the spoke needs to be tightened. By keeping the spoke to proper adjustment as directed by the manufacture you can prevent the rim damage to the best.

Make sure you don't overlook any bent in the rim of the mountain bike because it causes severe damage to the brake pads to an extent that the bike goes too tough to be stopped. Remember rims form the major part of the mountain bikes and they need equal maintenance and care as the other parts of the bike do.
