A Glass Of Empty Calories: Is Alcohol Making You Fat?
By. Melanie Click
Basically, yes! Empty calories - meaning there is no nutritive value mixed with them - are fattening, so the more alcohol you drink, the more weight you'll gain. You can help yourself by going 106 calories, while the sweet dessert wine will pile it on at 226 calories per glass. Three wines with dinner can give you an extra 400 calories. In all this doom and gloom there is one bright spot and that is champagne. It is one of the least fattening with the same calorie count as dry wine. For the light stuff that contains a lot less calories - 99 per pint rather than the 148 of non-light. But if you go for non-alcoholic beer the calories are exactly the same as full beer.

What about wine? Generally, the sweeter the wine, the more calories it has. Dry wine will give you around 106 calories, while the sweet dessert wine will pile it on at 226 calories per glass. Three wines with dinner can give you an extra 400 calories. In all this doom and gloom there is one bright spot and that is champagne. It is one of the least fattening with the same calorie count as dry wine.

For vodka, whiskey, rum or gin the amount of calories depends on the proof. The less the proof, the fewer the calories. So double shot 80% proof starts at 97 calories while 100 % proof goes up to 124. But de menthe will add a whopping 186 calories to your diet. The worst offender is pina colada at 262 calories for the common size. The easiest way to cut back is to order the smallest size serve available.
