A Formal Tea for Your Reception

FORMAL TEAS - GUIDELINES

Teas are perfect for wedding or baby showers, birthdays, wedding receptions, fashion shows and fund raisers, but most men are not as comfortable in this environment. It is permissible to serve champagne at a tea for toasting and honoree, but the site or caterer must have a liquor license or give permission for you to gain a one-day liquor license to serve.

The beautiful baked goods and clever filled sandwiches (finger food) can be just as expensive to prepare as hors d’oeuvres. Using several types of tea in different style teapots or lovely silver sets works perfectly for buffet type serving, but small menus and individual servings are part of a seated arrangement.

TEAS - TIMELINES

1. Begin three to four months in advance or as any wedding invitation guideline suggests.

2. Decide on the number of guests and budget.

3. Determine the location for the tea. [Many hotels serve a high tea (4 pm)

4. Small boutique tea rooms are available in communities for smaller receptions.

5. Hosting a tea in your home or terrace is possible. Party rental companies have many of the essentials.

6. With the date and time set, you will send formal invitations stating the reason for the gathering.

Important Details

• Large teas will have individual table settings, themes of color linens, teapots and tea cups.

• For a lovely table effect, use tables that seat 4 or 6, floor-length fine linens & napkins.

• Smaller tables to fit four to six are best for conversation.

• Request those serving to wear nice clothing, with aprons. Flowers are very important on the tables, but the focus is on the delicate sandwiches and desserts served. These are often provided on tiered servers with paper doilies.

• Serve both types of tea -- herbal is important to many.
