Food & Wine Magazine Celebrates Its 30th Anniversary

Michael and Ariane Batterberry founded the magazine in 1978. The monthly magazine is published by American Express Publishing. The Batterberry’s also founded Food Arts Magazine and their articles have appeared in Harper’s Bazaar magazine and USA Today among others throughout the years.

Since 1986, Food & Wine magazine has hosted an event called the Food & Wine Classic in Aspen, CO every year in June. Each year Food & Wine magazine identifies culinary superstars to the event. In 1988 the Food & Wine magazine "Best New Chefs" award made its debut at the event and since has evolved into the most sought-after event of its kind. In 2008 Food & Wine Magazine named Jim Burke of Philadelphia, Gerard Craft of St. Louis, Tim Cushman of Boston and Jeremy Fox among many others, for this coveted award.

The Food & Wine Classic event is lauded by the food industry and features cooking demonstrations, wine tastings, speakers, wine seminars and cooking competitions. The event draws 5,000 people including the food industry’s top chefs, restaurateurs, food journalists and enthusiasts.

In 2005 Food & Wine Magazine became a sponsor of the now-popular cooking competition television show "Top Chef" on the Bravo network. As a part of the grand prize package, the winner of "Top Chef" is featured in Food & Wine magazine and is invited to showcase their food at the annual Food & Wine Classic event.

The 30th anniversary issue of Food & Wine magazine hit stands in August 2008. The issue features a nostalgic look back on 30 years of the best food and wine including best fast recipes, 30 years of wine and 30 years of food history.

In addition to its nostalgic theme, the issue takes a look at the future of food and its role in pop culture. In an article entitled "Food & Wine’s 30th Anniversary Part at the Glass House," editor in chief Dana Corwin gathered a handful of food visionaries for great food and conversation celebrating the magazine’s anniversary.

Food & Wine Magazine also announced in its anniversary issue that it is now the sponsor along with Travel+Leisure magazine, of the Food Network New York City Wine & Food Festival.

Food magazines and cooking magazines like Bon Appetit, Cooking Light, Everyday Food and Vegetarian Times are Food & Wine magazine’s biggest competitors.
