Knives Needed in All Kitchen Cutlery Sets
By. Darrin Reservitz
Looking to buy one or two quality kitchen cutlery sets? Then you're taking the right first step - research! Knives come in all shapes, sizes and materials and are used for different purposes, which is why you need a set, and not just a single knife.

The following are the knives you'll need:

Chef's Knife

You will use The Cook's Knife, also known as the Chef's Knife, for difficult jobs like dicing food. It ranges between 6 and 12 inches in length. So that you can easily use it on a cutting board, it has a rounded shaped blade. This is your "work" knife, performing the strenuous, repetitive jobs you need done in the kitchen. Yet, and this is a little knife trivia for you, the Chef's Knife is somewhat infamous as the knife used in the movie Halloween.

The Bread Knife

I'm sure you already know the Bread Knife's life purpose in any of the good kitchen cutlery sets. Correct! To slice bread. It's 8 inches long.

The Paring Knife

The Paring Knife is only 3 inches long. But what it lacks in size, it makes up for in use. You will find it an indispensible part of all kitchen cutlery sets as you use it for peeling and coring.

The Utility Knife

The Utility Knife, ranging in length from 4 to 7 inches, has fallen out of favor with chefs. It's too large for exact tasks, which is the Paring Knife's domain and too small to compete with the Chef's Knife for the title of work horse.

The Steak Knife

The Steak Knife is used to cut the meat at meal time. Thus it's looked fondly upon as it literally works to put food on the plates of hungry family members.

The Cleaver

The Cleaver, which, to its chagrin, looks rather ominous, is actually a helpful tool to have in the kitchen. It's a handy "knife" that is perfect for chopping and cutting bone.

The Boning Knife

As you may have guessed, or known, you'd use a Boning Knife to remove bones from cuts of meat. Unlike the above mentioned cleaver, which cuts through bone, the boning knife worms its way into small places and literally "ejects" the bone from the meat. It's about 6 inches long.

The Fillet Knife

Looking to fillet fish? Then you need the Fillet Knife, which, at around 10 inches in length, is a bigger version of the Boning Knife described above.

As you can see, no one knife can do all the cooking/food preparation jobs for you. As in an advanced economy, it's the division of labor, utilizing the talents of various knives, that gives you the cutting and slicing power you need. That's why you should look at comparing and shopping for kitchen cutlery sets.
