Anything that causes wear and tear on the muscles, ligaments, bones, and disks of the back can lead to back pain. Muscle relaxants are often used to treat cases of back pains. These drugs are alleviate pain that are brought by strains, sprains, muscle spasms, and other muscle conditions that cause pain. However, muscle relaxants do not heal injuries, they only help ease the pain and discomfort caused by several muscle conditions. Most of these dugs are available in tablet and in injectable forms. Though the use of muscle relaxant drugs are not prohibited and are encouraged by many health professionals, the safeness of these drugs are questioned by other health professionals. Side effects of muscle relaxants cannot be avoided and may vary from one person to another. Common side effects that can be experienced while under medication are drowsiness, dizziness, confusion, and many more.

Devil's claw is used by many as herbal pain relief medicine and may offer short-term relief of back pain because of iridoid glycosides it contains. These compounds are said to have anti-inflammatory and painkilling properties. Medical studies suggest that this herb is as effective as some muscle relaxants out in the market.
Though the use of certain plants as treatment for herbal pain relief is not prohibited. Individuals who want to try these alternatives should seek the approval of doctors to clarify side-effects and drug interactions that may occur while under herbal medication.
