This cake and bread shop has lots of different types of breads and cakes which attracts quite a fair bit of crowd on a sunday morning when I was there. I got myself a waffle and had to wait quite a bit since there are two orders before me. However, it is certainly worth the wait. The waffles are slightly crispy on the outside and it has a very nice fragrance which further enhances my appetite for it. It is good and tasty enough for me to enjoy it plain as it is without any spreads. Each plain waffle cost only $1, while those with spreads are more expensive.
Happened to come across this bakery other day and remember they were featured on the TV once. I went in to get a box of Tau Sau Piah for my grandpa. My grandpa loves these traditional snacks. He always have them when he is having his coffee break in the afternoon and after dinner. We had these Tau Sau Piah for our coffee session when ivisited him earlier. The skin was light and flaky with not overly sweet bean paste in it. These handmade tau sau piah were really nice in its own way and relatively cheap as well. I paid $4.00 for 10 pieces in a box. We enjoyed it very much.Spending: Approximately SGD 4.00
Gin Thye is a very established confectionery shop. Shop owners are nice and friendly. Most importantly, a one stop service for wedding cakes, pastries, wedding items and etc.
What I like about Gin Thye Cake Maker Mooncake is that, the skin of the mooncake is thin, everyone also knows that the thinner the skin of the mooncake, the more skilled the person is to achieve that thickness. I bought the lotus mooncake with one egg yolk, the lotus is really smooth and not too sweet. I love it so much that I ate about nearly three quarter of the mooncake at one go! The egg yolk is not too salty nor dry, just that the appearance of the egg yolk is not like the ones you see in those that you bought from hotels and other places with are round and circular. While the egg yolk in this mooncake is like deformed. Overall the price of the mooncake is reasonable about $40++ per box and I will buy mooncake from there again next year.
What could be better than having chinese pastries for tea. I was craving for some tau sia piah, and I bought five pieces for $3.50. The pastry skin has this flakiness to it and its filling is full of the traditional bean paste. This stall was actually interviewed by the media and was telecast on TV. The current boss of this shop is the second generation, he took over the business after his father passed away. This is one of their outlet and it is open 24 hours! How good is it to have a bakery to be open the entire day and you do not have to worry that you would be hungry anytime of the day.
It is rare that bread shops would open 24 hours, and in a neighborhood no less. But it is just the case with this particular shop. It is quite convenient, especially if i get hungry out of nowhere in the middle of the night. There\'s more option than the normal 7-11 or Mac. The cashier is friendly, especially when there are not a lot of customers around. She will joke and play around with my toddler niece. And always service with a smile. The swiss roll is soft but too bad, the chocolate taste was not strong enough. Instead, the cream is too buttery and salty. I have to justify though, at a price of $2.80, it is considered as reasonable.
This bakery, besides selling bread and cakes also sells waffles and occasionally, curry puffs and baked tapicoa kueh. This is not the first time I am having its waffle, but that day, the smell of the waffle is so fragarent, it made me stop and buy one for my afternoon snack. At $0.90 only, you can get the good old plain waffles. I like having my waffles empty, without fillings, as I like to taste the waffle itself. It does offer peanut butter, kaya, butter other fillings for an additional cost. The waffle is slightly crispy on the outside and soft on the inside and the waffle taste is just right as well - not too sweet or tasteless so you can definitely eat it on its own.Spending: Approximately SGD 0.90
