Tomang, Jakarta District Guide
by: Dina Indrasafitri

The Tomang area is a busy gateway area filled with many different activities. Most people consider it merely a ‘passing-by’ area before going to the Taman Anggrek or Roxy trade center. What they didn’t know is, surprise surprise, Roxy and Taman Anggrek are actually sub-districts of Tomang, and that’s not the only pleasant surprises Tomang has to offer.

For one thing, Tomang actually has many healthy offers to improve your lifestyle. The Tomang Residence, offering a limited number of town houses inside an area with the concept of ‘healthy and environmental-friendly residences’. The complex is located nearby the Taman Anggrek Mall and it promotes a number of advantages for its residents such as an environmentally friendly waste handling system, town houses with good air circulation system in order to save energy, and other facilities comparable to those provided in an exclusive, uptown apartment.

Aside from the Tomang Residence, there are also other options for housing, such as the soaring towers of Taman Anggrek Apartment, amalgamated with the Taman Anggrek Mall, and the Permata Hijau Apartment.

For those looking for a short term stay, several excellent hotels are conveniently located in the area, such as the four-star Ciputra Hotel, the Twin Plaza Hotel, the Menara Peninsula Tower or, for a middle range budget, the Mega Anggrek Hotel.

Another option to improve your lifestyle is to eat healthy. It is not a well-known fact that the Tomang area has many vegetarian restaurants, such as the 96 Vegetarian Fastfood in Jl Kebun Jeruk I, the Vegetarian Restaurant at The Tomang Barat Market, and the Mudita Restaurant in Batu Ceper street. The Tomang Area also have many interesting roadside food, mostly Chinese food.

For shopping, the Tomang Area is an adventurous playground. There’s no questioning the massive Taman Anggrek Mall with its huge food court, a skating rink and a gazillion of shops and boutiques. The ITC Roxy is not exactly what you expect if what pops in your mind is the London Roxy, but, you know what, it is a cell phone addict’s paradise. You can find almost any kind of cell phone here from the new to second hand ones, from the blue-screened basic to the ones with hundreds of applications you may never use anyway.

The building of a central business district (CBD), a business center complete with entertainment facilities, an international school, and exclusive residential facilities, near the Tangerang area, will undoubtedly have its own effects on the Tomang district. The district is already busied with activities surrounding many campuses in the area such as the Trisakti Campus and Atmajaya. If the CBD reaches full swing, the Tomang area would have to welcome a flow of business people heading west every morning, contrary to the usual west-south route. Hopefully, this will not produce any negative effect on the seemingly contrasting hope of making the Tomang area an environment- friendly neighborhood.
