Having no plans on a Saturday night, I immediately accepted a friend's invitation to go to Café Sendok. Café Sendok is at the Legian Street , adjacent to Poppies Lane 2 and about 10 meters away from Mataram Street .
Café Sendok ( sendok means spoon in English) is a small bamboo shack with wooden furniture and merry light bulbs that remind me of a Christmas tree. This airy café boasts of the friendliest service from the staff and even from the owners themselves (a German-Balinese couple), making the place simply homey. Cold towels are provided as you enter, a welcome respite from the tropical heat. The drinks menu above the bar is carefully handwritten using colored chalk. It's a small café and can accommodate not more than 50 patrons, mostly elderly expats. While they may not be the most comfortable seats in the café, the stools and high tables offer the best view of Legian Street , especially at night. My friend and I chose to sit on a corner sofa and ordered a pitcher of beer and pizza.
German food is likewise served along with the usual sandwiches, burgers, and fries. The vibe was simply relaxing; our three-hour stay felt like minutes. While others were dancing in other clubs dressed in the trendiest clothes, I was chilling on the sofa in my comfy shorts and flip-flops.
We were still around as Café Sendok closed at around 2 am. We only spent Rp 35,000 for a pitcher of draft beer. Affordable beer plus a good conversation… ah, a spoonful of happiness.
