Meet New Faces at The Faces Restaurant
by: Galuh Wulandarie

Welcome to the Faces Restaurant, this restaurant with an open kitchen lies in the heart of The Balé with a stunning view of the main swimming pool. “We named this place The Faces, because it is the only place where we can actually see faces and meet other people”, said Mr. Agus Suardana, Assistant Director of Sales, explaining about the name. He later explained to us that due to the self contained nature of the villas, most guests would rather have most of their meals in the villas itself. It is only at breakfast time, that most of the guests will be in the restaurant.

The meal kicked off with a plate of spicy corn cake which is shaped like a muffin. This is interesting because I never associated bread with chili, but the cake is definitely tasty.

For our appetizers, we had caesar salad and tuna tartar. Organic food supporters will be happy to note that the restaurant only uses fresh organic vegetables for their salads. For the tuna tartar, I did find the presentation very nicely done, there was this chilled tuna shaped like a circle which was topped with an avocado guacamole. On the side, there was garlic bread and spicy corn sauce. Try the tuna with the black pepper in it and it will give your palate a delightful tang. The caesar salad tasted very fresh with the crotons and goat cheese. If I had to choose, I'll pick the tuna tartar because of the fresh flavour of the fish.

For the main course, we had the chicken breast (Moroccan spiced chicken breast and bell pepper parsley with crust and brown sauce), satay campur (chicken, lamb, beef and pork satay with peanut sauce), seafood curry (shrimp, squid, fish, white rice, chili and small portion of salad), and the seabass (crisp fried sea bass filled with organic garden dressed in extra virgin olive oil couscous). Among these four main courses, two of them fascinated me tremendously which I think needs special mention. The first is the seafood curry which was tempting due to its fresh orange color and inviting aroma. I guess the chef must have labored over this dish with much love as I think this was undoubtedly the main reason it was tasting this good. The second was the chicken breast; nothing beats the combination of a tender chicken meat with delicious brown sauce. I had tried many chicken breasts before and I think this piece of meat is definitely a cut above the rest.

Lastly it was time for desserts. I must say this was one of the few high end restaurants in Bali that serves desserts less the alcohol. We ordered the strawberry delight and chocolate soufflé. I rate both of the desserts rated five stars and I would highly recommend them. The strawberry delight came with strawberry fillings and strawberry ice cream, which I feel is quite a delicious potent mix. As for the chocolate soufflé, it came with a scoop of hazelnut ice cream. The center of the soufflé had chocolate oozing out which is simply magnificent. You would have missed Nusa Dua if you did not try these two desserts!

P.S. Most Moslems would find it highly inconvenient in finding suitable halal food in Bali. You do not need to worry if you stay at The Balé though. The Balé has a Halal Certificate, so all you need to do is ask your personal butler at the Balé.
