Brewerkz Restaurant & Microbrewery: A Great “American” Experience

There is a reason why a lot of American expatriates love Brewerkz, the restaurant and brewery located at Riverside Point (opposite Clarke Quay). Of all the pubs and restaurants in Singapore , Brewerkz comes closest to emulating the American dining experience. By combining good food, great beer and a sprawling “weekend” atmosphere, Brewerkz has managed to create a definitive suburban hangout. It is kid friendly, virtually smoke-free and guaranteed to leave you well fed. The Brewerkz Restaurant concept is modeled after similar concepts in the U.S.A. and Canada and was founded by Devin Otto Kimble and Daniel Flores in 1997. By featuring high quality American-style food and a full range of premium beers handcrafted on-site, Brewerkz gives expatriates and locals alike a fun and informal dining experience. Located along the Singapore River , Brewerkz seats 240 inside and over 300 al fresco and serves an average of 1,100 customers daily.
- Food
Appetizers range from steamed mussels and potato skins to nachos, chips and salsa, and are a great way to set up your taste buds for what lays ahead. For a main course, there are several tasty choices: T-bone steak, pork ribs and thin-crust pizza are countered by their stylish big burger selection. My favourite is the Cowboy Burger, which comes with cheddar, bacon and a tangy ranch sauce. Side dishes can either be fries or onion rings, and together with a pint of beer can fill you up rather quickly.
The mainly western menu does have a few pleasant surprises; their satay is generously proportioned and prepared with a special homemade sauce, their burgers huge and well cooked, and they even offer a falafel burger for vegetarians.
Other items include barbequed pork ribs, thin-crust pizza, grilled t-bone, homemade bread and a special curry of the month that is served with rice. Their dessert selection is temptingly sweet and features delicious homemade ice-creams and brownies.
- Atmosphere
The interior of the restaurant is dimly lit, spacious and family friendly. Outside seating areas are breezy and offer a scenic view of the Singapore River . There is a smoking section quite away from main restaurant, so your chances of inhaling second hand smoke while you eat is remote. The entrance area to Brewerkz includes a shop that sells sweat shirts, t-shirts, beer mugs and cigars! And Frisbees!
- Service
A strong point to the Brewerkz dining experience is the top quality staff that they employ. During my visit the staff was always attentive, friendly and helpful. They were alert and responsive to my needs.
- Beer
The Brewerkz’s custom-made Microbrewery is run by Brew Master Scott Robertson, a former Canadian physicist, who began brewing at his family’s Regina , Saskatchewan , brewpub in the 1991. Robertson’s brews include a core group of 4 beers that are always available, that are also best-selling selections like the India Pale Ale, a very popular Golden Ale, a traditionally hoppy Pilsner Lager and Hopback Ale, a cask conditioned bitter of true English pedigree. In addition Wheat Ale and Kölsch each alternate with one another for half of the year and a dark brew is also featured on tap.
A sampling of their main Beers India Pale ale- crisp, biting, full flavoured, heavy but curiously quenching Drinkel Ryzen-strong and smooth, almost stout-like quality, bitter Hop Harvest- good quality dark beer, smooth Pilsner Lager- sharp with and almost tequila like snap to it Wheat beer- fuzzy light, smooth ‘ladies’ beer Golden Ale- smooth, nice light beer, goes down easy
The SD Food Advisor’s take on Brewerkz Brewerkz is a great place to escape to for a few hours and get full satisfaction from great tasting food and beer. When compared with the big US chains like TGIF’s and Houlihans, Brewerkz holds an edge by possessing a refreshing personal touch that makes it a higher quality dining experience and something unique for people living in Singapore.
