Prettily named “sweetie pie” in French, this quaint little café is home to many French bread, dessert and coffee addicts who find their way into Choupinette every morning the moment the sun comes up. Taking residence along Bukit Timah Road , many have regarded this café as the perfect start to their day, or an idyllic spot to laze their hours away amidst its cosy surrounds. More than just a bakery, Choupinette allows its patrons to choose from not only a wide selection of over 30 different freshly baked breads, but also a dine-in menu of wholesome sandwiches, fresh salads, dainty little French pastries and warm beverages.
The Vibe For the past five years since Choupinette was opened, café owner Agnes Verrier has since applied her expert touches to its décor to give it its irresistibly homely appeal. Being a passionate interior designer herself, Agnes takes care of her “sweetie pie” as carefully as she looks after her own stylishly furnished home which has graced the covers of many prestigious local magazines like Singapore Tatler and Prestige.
Dining in Choupinette was reminiscent to being in having a light snack in one’s own garden. Furnished in shades of green and brown, it is easy to unwind and dine on its rustic wooden tables and cushioned chairs, and just lounge around in this charming pad, with bright orange drapes jazzing up the glass windows and giving this café some much needed privacy. Doubling as an eclectic space for some shopping, diners can bring home specially designed lampshades, multi-coloured ceramic pots, local travel books and many other quirky items that are exhibited around the café.
The Food Taste a slice of genuine France in this café that keeps everything authentic, from the breads to the delicious pastries and the altogether warm family-styled café ambience. Unlike the usual overtly intricate French pastries that are available in other over-priced establishments, the sweet treats at Choupinette have more of a simple no-frills appearance, with the emphasis being placed more on its quality and taste, which is at the same time priced reasonably.
Upon entering, diners will be greeted and enticed with an entire wall of different breads contained in rattan baskets, freshly baked daily with choices of cheese focaccia, family country bread, sour dough and much more. There is also a long glass counter that displays a tempting selection of cakes and pastries which has a good visual effect to stimulate anyone’s taste palates.
Here in Choupinette, you can savour a breakfast that is worth the extra effort in getting up early for. A noteworthy set to have is their famous Eggs Benedict’s ($18) that is a concoction of crispy toast with ham and topped off with a plump poached egg, with creamy hollandaise sauce enveloping it like a halo. Those with a sweet tooth can satisfy their cravings with their famous macaroons that come in a dazzling range of flavours like chocolate, raspberry, wild strawberry, passionfruit and many others. Also do have a taste of their Tarte Aux Fraises ($5.50) which is a strawberry tart with a crumbly almond base, and the Millefeuille Framboise ($6) that is a sweet masterpiece made up of crisps of biscuits with sweet raspberries and creamy custard in between its layers.
The SD Food Advisor’s take on Choupinette The chefs sure work hard to produce fresh pastries every morning and throughout the day. With such a good range of breads, cakes and beverages within such a small space, Choupinette will impress you with its capability in combining quantity with quality. The food will also serve as comfort food for the French expatriates who would appreciate a taste of home. An attractive spot to spend many lazy afternoons in, the merits of this café have already found their way across the island via the word of mouth and hence, attracted many diners to its venue since its launch in 2001. If you like what Choupinette serves, you can also engage their catering services which are also of comparable standards guaranteed to please your guests.
