The Food
The menu carries a wide range of authentic German food including their famous flammkuchen, sauerkraut, German sausages, roasted meats and wines directly imported from Germany. Watch your food freshly prepared by head chef Robert Leistner in Magma's open-kitchen concept and inhale the first whiff of roasted delicacies over the counter.
For starters, Weinsuppe mit Sahne ($12), white wine soup with cream is an excellent choice. From the vineyards of South Germany, this dish adds a sweet touch to rich white wine while cream makes the its texture creamy and smooth. Other recommended soups are the Pumpkin Soup as well as creamy Lobster-Shrimp Chowder.
For a large group, sharing a mouth-watering flammkuchen, particularly Germany's traditional Leek & Bacon Flammkuchen ($14 for normal; $21 for large) would be ideal. The flammkuchen resembles a thin-crusted pizza, but the difference lies in its use of crème fraiche (sour cream) instead of sweet tomato paste. This dish is served piping hot directly from the pizza oven and topped with a delicious mix of fresh leek and tender strips of bacon, all of which combine to tempt one's taste-buds to indulge in multiple servings.
The ubiquitous pork knuckle, Schweinshaxe mit Erbsenpuree und Sauerkraut ($19) is the highlight of Magma's menu. Done Bavarian-style – grilled – it is a hearty serving of meat bone with tantalizing sauerkraut and mashed green peas on the side. Pre-soaked in only salt water, its crispy skin reveals a mouth-watering chunk of well-cooked pork. Without any gravy to mask its meaty goodness, it all boils down to freshness and chef Robert's cooking experience. More care could have been taken to perfect the dish, for corners of the pork knuckle were charred – this simply meant less of the delicious meat to sink one's teeth into. Meat lovers will also be delighted to know that Magma has Pork Knuckle Mondays with the specialty going for $16.
With regards to the famous sausages we have heard so much about, Magma's Currywurst sausage ($9) certainly lives up to expectations. Fried sausage with home-made spicy curry gravy, it combines salty and spicy together and is served with wheat bread. Crisp skin with a crumbly interior makes it a very tasty dish. The curry is not as creamy as local versions, but matches up in taste and satisfaction. Diners may also choose a range of sausages from the menu and have them on a platter.
Exquisite desserts like Gebackene Apfelscheiken mit Zimthonig ($9), baked apple slices in puff pastry with doused with honey and cinnamon are a hot favourite amongst guests. Dipped with honey, the natural sweetness of apple with a tinge of cinnamon seems to melt in the mouth.
