If you are a mushroom lover, this is the perfect restaurant for you. Located in the Singapore Indoor Stadium, Mushroom Pot serves a jaw-dropping variety of mushrooms as well as quite an extensive range of stir-fry items. With a branch located at Orchard Point, mushroom aficionados can now easily satisfy their cravings for the yummy fungi at two locations.
The Vibe Step through Mushroom Pot's shiny glass doors and be greeted by an orange and mahogany interior. Pictures of different species of mushrooms hang on the walls, providing an interesting and relevant decoration. Contemporary classical music plays in the background, and the sight of the swaying palm trees on Stadium Walk will bring about a laid-back atmosphere for all patrons to enjoy.
The Food Think Mushroom Pot only serves mushrooms? Think again. Besides the usual mushroom platters that you can order for steamboat, there are stir-fry creations, some of which devoid of mushrooms; to cater to those who aren't too fond of mushrooms. For starters, try the Wild Mushrooms with Thai Spices($8) as the Thai chillies and parsley give a good kick to the usual mushroom flavour. This dish presents a good introduction to the world of wild mushrooms for the uninitiated.
A healthy choice for a meal is the mushroom steamboat, for which over 20 varieties of mushrooms are available. An interesting fact is that the scientific name of each mushroom is stated in the menu, so this is fodder for encyclopaedia enthusiasts as well. For example, you might try ordering the boletus impolitus or BIM for short($7). Or, give your tongue a workout and order the stropharia rugoso annulata ($6.50).
For those not so keen on tongue twisters, the restaurant's stir fry options are commendable. Order the Tibet Ribs($9), which is pork ribs done in a brilliant red, sweet sauce, sprinkled with sesame seeds. The vibrance of the colour suggests some artificiality, but taste-wise, there are no complaints, save for the fact that the dish might have been better served hot.
A unique side dish containing mushrooms is the Mushroom Rolls($10), which is finely chopped mushrooms wrapped in crisp seaweed, deep-fried. Reminiscent of sushi, mushroom fans will like this dish as the hot, crispy exterior is a good contrast of texture compared to the soft mushroom pieces inside.
Fish lovers must try the Cod Fish with Matsusake($28). Served in a slightly peppery black curry sauce, this is a winner. Fried to perfection, the batter used creates a thin, crumbly layer outside, and when accompanied by the soft, fragrant cod flesh, it is simply heavenly. The Matsusake mushrooms were a tad soggy, however.
Another addictive side dish is the Crispy Squid with Wasabi($12). Cut into bite-sized pieces, the crispy exterior belies the chewy squid, further set off by the distinctive-tasting wasabi sauce. The sauce goes very well with the squid, and you won't be able to resist asking for more.
Diners might want to note that dishes featured on the SD photos are sampling portions, actual sizes are larger.
The Service Mainly Mandarin-speaking, the staff went the extra mile to ensure our dining experience was an enjoyable one. Used plates were promptly replaced with new ones, and the waitress even anticipated our desire for more wasabi sauce, serving a saucer of it immediately. Be assured that you will be well looked after at Mushroom Pot.
