For quicker healing and protecting from further infection, you can cover cold sores with a protective petroleum based product. If you want to reduce the painfulness caused by the cold sores then you can take painkillers like aspirin and ibuprofen.

As they say, 'prevention is better than cure' and this applies to whether you want to keep off them. The most efficient way to prevent infection is not to exchange bodily fluids with people who are infected with a cold sore so, avoid kissing and sex.
