Multimedia Messaging Service

By: Ian Ball

MMS can be considered as an evolution of SMS. The main difference however is that, while SMS are limited to160 bytes, MMS does not have the size limit and can be of any size, that is of kilobytes or even larger. A third generation network is required for the activation of MMS.

Mobile phones must have in built software that allows the user to interact with the mobile subscriber to compose, send and receive multimedia messages. MMS is best suited for organizations, as they can use such service to create multimedia messages to be sent to their clients and others, to project images of their organization. MMS initially originated by the year 2002. Many manufacturers use different ways to incorporate MMS technology in many ways. For example, the Nokia phones are manufactured in such a way that they embed the MMS service directly into the phone. Sony Ericsson is introducing Enhanced Messaging Service.

MMS was developed in the Third Generation Partnership Program. There are three stages of MMS standards. They are the requirements, System Functions, Technical Realizations.

Though MMS has started to become a boon for many, there are some restrictions in them also. They are as follows:

1.The multimedia message created by one particular brand of phone may not be compatible with other brands of phones. This is known as lack of content adaptation.

2. The sending of MMS to a large number of people at a time is not possible, as it is very ineffective and also there might be a lot of failures in the sending of messages.

3.The configuration of the handset is very important in the reception of MMS. Unless the configuration is set properly, there might be lot of failures in the reception of the MMS.

4.The MMS service in many phones does not come with distribution lists. That is, the message cannot be comfortably addressed to many recipients at a time.

The use of MMS however, has not been safe like SMS. There have been a lot of cases and scams, the main tool being MMS and cell phones. The service has attracted a lot of miscreants to misuse them and create a lot of tension in the society.

The MMS is here to stay and it truly reflects the level the technology has developed over the years. If used properly for constructive purposes, the MMS would prove to be a boon for the people.
