Every little component that is part of the car plays important roles. They all serve important function that when they fail, the performance of the car slowly deteriorates with it. And that is the philosophy that the VW car parts were made of. No matter how small or unnecessary a car part might be, they are still made with good faith that they will last and perform efficiently. Among those little things are the distributor caps. And the VW distributor cap is made with supreme reliability to assure that the distributor of the car will perform well.
One must understand first the dynamics of the distributor itself before actually delving onto the topic of the distributor cap. The distributor in the ignition system of the car is a device which routes the high voltage in the correct firing order to the spark plugs. It consists of a rotating arm or rotor inside the distributor cap, on top of the distributor shaft, but insulated from it and the body of the vehicle. The metal part of the rotor contacts the central high voltage cable from the coil via a spring loaded carbon brush. The metal part of the rotor arm passes close to (but does not touch) the output contacts which connect via high tension cables to the spark plug of each cylinder. As the rotor spins within the distributor, electrical current is able to jump the small gaps created between the rotor arm and the contacts due to the high voltage created by the ignition coil.
Hence, the distributor caps are used in automobile engine to cover the distributor and its internal rotor. The rotor switches a high sparking voltage to the spark plugs. The distributor cap is a prime example of a component that eventually succumbs to heat and vibration. But even if its bakelite housing has not broken or cracked, carbon deposits and eroded metal terminals can cause distributor-cap failure. However it is a fairly easy and inexpensive part to replace. The VW distributor cap has one post for each cylinder and in points ignition systems there is a central post for the coil voltage coming into the distributor. In HEI (High Energy Ignition) systems where there is not a central post, the ignition coil sits on top of the distributor. Although they are vulnerable to wear out, the VW distributor caps are known for its durability.
Aside from its durable and reliable features, one can be sure that the VW distributor cap will last for a long time. This is because its maker, the Volkswagen Company, has been in the automobile and auto parts industry for almost 80 years. Their service and reputation is a proof that you can truly trust their products especially if you opt for top quality and performance. It has extended its loyal service and functional products to the whole world without hesitation. The company has focused its goal in serving its people with best quality and high-performance products, which is also the legacy and inspiration that made them last until today.
One should never take for granted any part of his car, no matter how small or how little role it plays in the car's performance. It has a reason to be there after all. And when it all backfires, you can always opt to trust the ever-reliable VW to help you find durable parts, even the VW distributor cap.
