Hotel Savoy Homann is the pinnacle of Bandung's accommodations. Not only is it the oldest hotel in the city, having been established in the black and white ages of the 1939's, it is also an artefact of the Art Deco period. The exterior of the hotel, with its swirling streamlined façade spells Art Deco with a capital A. Unfortunately, the interior has over the years had some minor renovations, that have somewhat altered the overall feel. Still, some of the rooms have been left in original state, and offer the unique experience of staying in exactly the same room that Charlie Chaplin stayed in 1925.
The Savoy Homann is closely connected to one of the most illustre moments in Indonesian history. In 1955, the Asia Afrika meeting was held in the nearby Gedung Merdeka . There, leaders of Third World countries on initiative of Indonesia's first president Sukarno, established the alliance of non-aligned countries. Many of the Third World leaders stayed at the Savoy Homann, so next to Nasser and Ho Chi Minh, it can be your turn to enjoy the unique ambiance of this place.
The tradition has been carried on to this day, as most of the guests these days come to the hotel on business-related visits. Government associates and company meetings give the hotel, like no other in the city, quite an official character.
The staff fit in perfectly with the décor of the hotel. Dressed in their uniforms, they could have stepped right through a time machine, to address your needs and wants according to a polite and formal etiquette.
As many other places in Bandung, the atmosphere of the past seems to live on in the present in a sort of faded way. The carpets look tired, and former splendour has lost its shine over the years. The pictures of Bandung in the old days, many of them private possessions of the hotel, give the place an almost museum-like feel. It is one of the few places in Bandung though, that has been left in its original state, and the contrast between modern day city life and the colonial history makes a stay in the Savoy Homann a unique experience.
