Haircuts in Jakarta: choose your cutting edge
by: Dina Indrasafitri

Why does it take so much to find the perfect hairdresser for some people? Maybe it's because we are trusting someone to take care of our most basic asset: our looks. Money comes and goes, clothes can be sold at a second hand shop in order to buy new ones, but looks? One fatal haircut could take weeks to be repaired, especially if it's a very short haircut.

Thus, being in a foreign country may cause even more anxiety to those who pays extra attention to their appearance, or even to those who merely does not want to come out of a salon looking like a grotesque imitation of an 80s pop star. Indeed, one must take care to pick from hundreds of hairdresser's salon in Jakarta .

The choosing of a salon or barbershop evokes many considerations. For instance, it is extremely helpful if the hair dresser speaks good English. Talking about hairstyles often involves complicated requests: a little bit off there, make it slightly curly at the bottom, the layers should be generous but not overwhelming, and so on. The question of hygiene is another thing to be aware of. If you are in doubt about the safety of the instruments used, eg razors, it is just right that you ask questions to the hair dressers or ask them to use the sterilizer usually available in big salons.

There are not many ‘exclusive' or big barber shops in Jakarta , save those provided in a hotel. Most of them could only hold three or four people at a time. With a very cheap price, you can get a no-nonsense haircut, a shave, a massage (which, take heed, can be viewed as inhumane for some people as the barber seems to try every way possible to crack your neck's joints in order to make you feel better) and a tonic massage with a hair tonic smelling like it hasn't seen lights for ages. Albeit the rareness, there's Masle Barber Shop in Kemang, the XP barber shop in the Sudirman Place or Pax in Grand Wijaya if you are not feeling adventurous for a session in the typical local barber shop.

As for beauty salons, you may find many options available. Areas that boast many beauty salons are Kemang Area, Santa area near Blok M and Tebet area. Lu'vaze in Plaza Senayan proves to be very popular and many lay their trust in Peter F Saerang salons, available at Plaza Indonesia and Mall Taman Anggrek, for quality. Chandra Gupta Hair and Beauty Salon, available in Mall Taman Anggrek manages to deliver sophisticated and exclusive service. Johnny Andrean's Salon still has quite a lot of devoted followers, with more than 100 beauty salons spread across Indonesia . You can find easily find them in Mall Ambassador, Plaza Senayan, Blok M Plaza or Plaza Semanggi.

Rudi Hadisuwarno is another trusted name in the Indonesian Salon business, although most people consider the brand more as a hair academy or salon products than a beauty salon, and teenagers think that the brand is too ‘mature' for them. The Rudy Hadisuwarno line of salons, like the Johnny Andrean Salons, could be found in virtually every part of Jakarta and provides a safe option for a regular haircut. Albeit the teenager's opinion about the brand, the Rudy Hadisuwarno actually opens up different lines for different customers, the ‘Hadisuwarno' Salon, available at the Le Meridien hotel and Plaza Indonesia, is aimed at ‘exclusive' and ‘mature', the ‘Salon Rudy',available at Mall Karawaci and Depok ,aims for ‘friendly and family-like', the ‘Brown' Salon, available at Blok M Plaza and Citraland Mall , aims at teenagers and Kiddy cuts aims for kids of course

Firman salon in the Prapanca road is popular among teenagers for their Japanese-styled layered cuts, another popular option for teenagers is the Alfons Salon in the Panglima Polim area.
