Many of such simple yet authentic dishes can be found at the hawker stalls along the roads and this is what characterises Malaysia as a food lover's paradise cum destination. Ramly Burger: This is no usual burger as the locals will tell you. Originating from Malaysia , it is unique in its flavour and make. There will not be an exact replicate in terms of taste and flavour in any other part of the world. Don't be fooled by its simple presentation. Take heart for indeed it does overwhelm you with its irresistible flavour. The Ramly Burger stalls can be found in front of almost every 7-Eleven outlet in Kuala Lumpur and Klang Valley . Such is the strategic location as they open only at night to cater to the night crowds as dinner meals and supper snacks. The average burger which basically consists of a beef pattie or chicken pattie, onions, mayonnaise and vegetables would cost approximately RM2.50 and a Ramly Special burger with cheese and egg would cost about RM4.00. The burgers are not as well presented as the ones you find at McDonalds or Burger King but the fun comes from having to skilfully tackle these burgers upon every bite you take.
Nasi Lemak: Probably one of Malaysia 's signature dishes, the Nasi Lemak can be found almost anywhere and everywhere. Literally known as “fat rice” reason being it is cooked with coconut milk which has fattening, it remains affordable from RM4.00 to RM6.00, depending on what you select as accompaniments. The usual set comes with cucumbers, egg, roasted nuts, ikan bilis (anchovies) and a choice of chicken or squid. What makes the nasi lemak unique is the sambal (a sweet and spicy sauce) that enhances its taste. To gauge how good a nasi lemak is, always try its sambal. There are so many nasi lemak shops within Malaysia so in order avoid ending up with mediocre nasi lemak, ask the locals for recommendations.
Satay: Skewed meat on a stick is what defines a satay. The most popular satay can be found in Kajang and hence, the term Kajang Satay. There is a variety of meats with unique condiments to choose from. The most common satay will be beef and chicken; with the exception of some stalls serving exotic meats such as mutton, deer and rabbit. The satay is usually served with cucumbers, onions, ketupat (glutinous rice) and peanut sauce. Price per stick of satay will be RM0.50-RM0.60 but don't expect it to be as fulfilling a meal as a usual main course as it is more of a light snack rather than a hearty meal.
Roti Canai: What is known to some as Roti Prata is actually what they call Roti Canai in Malaysia . The dough is prepared in the same manner as a pizza. It is moulded into a thin slice and then cooked over a hot plate and served with dhal or curry on a separate plate. There are many different varieties of Roti Canai. The popular ones will be the Roti Telur which is cooked with eggs and the Roti Planta which has butter in it. Average price of a Roti Canai will be RM0.80 whereas the Roti Telur and Roti Planta will cost more at RM1.20. Other variations of Roti Canai would be Roti Sardin, Roti Kaya and Roti Telur Bawang (egg and onion).
