Many Singaporeans are under the assumption that travelling to Johor (or many other parts of Malaysia) is risky business. There’s the risk of being robbed, conned, carjacked, all of the above and everything else in between. Some might even quiver from the thought of having to travel across the border. Others completely shun from visiting their neighbours. These assumptions are not unfounded. There have been reports of Singaporeans (as well as Malaysians themselves) falling prey to a series of unfortunate events. If it makes Singaporeans feel better, Malaysians aren’t an exception to these incidents.

In an effort to encourage Singaporeans to make that trip across the border, the Johor police force will see an expansion in order to meet the growing demands in security. The presence of Singaporeans will greatly encourage tourists from our friendly neighbours. In addition, Singaporean businessmen who are required to travel back and forth between the two countries can feel at ease.

In order to beef up security, the police force will see its numbers doubled to an estimated 160,000 force nationwide.  With such an increase, the country hopes to curb criminal activities for both foreigners and locals. Importance has been placed on Singaporean businessmen as they often visit Malaysia for business. The doubling of the police force is a step forward in allaying the concerns and fears of many. In time, it can only be hoped that Malaysia’s reputation will be one that is free of such negative assumptions.
