The best burgers in town don’t come from a fast food chain or a fancy western joint. It is found at almost any 7-11 outlet. What is it called you might ask? It is the infamous Ramly Burger.
The Ramly Burger sensation has taken the country by storm and it is possibly Malaysia’s greatest gift to man. It is a truly Malaysian experience. Forget about drive thru’s and air conditioning. Do it the Ramly style complete with the road side, the heat and the sweat. Ramly Burger stalls are usually found outside a 7-11 outlet but there are other stalls strategically located within food courts and other areas with high traffic.
Ramly Burgers come in many different styles. The main attractions is usually the chicken and beef. There are some special stalls such as the one at the SS2 mamak which offers fish, prawn, deer and rabbit burger as well. Spicy Kitchen in Desa Sri Hartamas offers lamb meat burgers. An important thing to remember is that the original Ramly Burger only comes in chicken, beef, fish and prawns so all other burgers are not produced by the Ramly brand itself.
There are usually 2 different ways of preparing a Ramly Burger; “biasa” (which literally translates to “normal”) or “special”. The difference is that the “burger special” comes with egg. The basic ingredients for both the “biasa” and the “special” is the burger pate, cucumbers, onions, mayonnaise, cabbage and chilli/tomato sauce. You can opt to add cheese which would be a wise choice. It’s better than a quarter pounder. The burger is then cooked on a hot plate and certain stalls would add certain sauces to give it the extra kick. The burger pate is juicy and has a special taste to it. Some locals will refer to it as “ganja burger” (marijuana burger) because once you’ve tried it, you’ll be addicted.
Ramly Burger stalls are generally very open to variations. You can make special requests such as adding double cheese or even a mixed double (one beef pate with one chicken pate) if you’re into that sort of thing. The proprietors are very friendly and its always nice to have a chat with them while waiting for your burger. A regular burger would cost somewhere between RM2.50 to RM3 and a special would set you back a mere RM4 to RM5.
There are many Ramly Burger stalls spread all over the city. Some are more famous than others and there’s a reason why. They have probably mastered that art of preparing it. The notable ones are all located outside a 7-11 outlet. They include the ones at Sea Park, Damansara Utama and Ampang Point. The ones that are not located near a 7-11 outlet is the one at the SS2 fire station and the SS2 mamak. These stalls are not open everyday and are usually only open at night. You might have to drive to more than one location before you find the burger stall as they are not consistent with their business hours. But do not fret, there are so many of them around town so you’re bound to stumble upon a Ramly stall. Don’t miss the opportunity to try one before you leave.
