Roti & Rice Is Full Of Surprise
by: Sophia

Roti & Rice is a typical Malaysian “mamak” establishment serving good food at fair prices. Located in SS2, a residential area in Petaling Jaya, Roti and Rice it is pretty hidden from the hustle and bustle of the city life. The menu consists of a mix of local delights as well as Northern Indian cuisine that is served 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

      o     The Vibe

The entire establishment is fashioned after a regular ‘mamak’ outlet. It uses simple plastic furniture and it is in this simplicity that customers find comfort. There’s no pretentiousness and no formalities. It is casual and comfortable and the al fresco dining makes it a cool and breezy experience.

      o     The Food

The Nasi Lemak at Roti & Rice is a must try. The rice is steamed with coconut milk and fresh pandan leaves hence an alluring lingering fragrance which is simply irresistible. The Sambal enhances the dish with its moderately sweet and spicy taste. You can opt for a variety of condiments such as Chicken Kapitan, Mutton Rendang, Petai Prawns or Sambal Sotong. The Tau Sar and Lin Yong Naan is Roti & Rice’s very own original creation, not to be found anywhere else. The Lin Yong (Lotus Paste) and Tau Sar (Red Bean Paste) is reasonably sweet and its texture soft. The combination of the paste and the naan bread creates a colourful mix of Indian and Chinese flavours. A delicious serving of Naan bread goes well with Tandoori Chicken and at Roti & Rice, you’ll be able to get the freshest and the juiciest Tandoori Chicken around. The Northern Indian Naan maker’s finesse in sealing the juices keeps the chicken tender and soft. Though marinated with many different spices it remains mild and not too spicy. Those preferring a slightly sour taste to their chicken can drizzle it with kasturi lime juice. Not to miss is the specially imported curry mee from Penang. The curry soup is just the right texture and comes with the option of different types of noodles. It is topped with a generous portion of chicken strips, bean sprouts, cockles, prawns and fried taufu. It sounds appetizing and it is rightly so. Finally, the Sup Kambing (mutton soup) should be enough to complete any meal. The locals sometimes drink this soup as a natural aphrodisiac. A variety of local herbs and spices as well as Australian mutton is used to create this bowl of soup.

      o     The Service

You’re not going to find well dressed, perfectly trimmed waiters at Roti & Rice. The dress code is casual but the service isn’t compromised. They are polite and attentive as well as friendly.

SD Food Advisor’s take on Roti & Rice

Roti & Rice provides a dining experience of a different kind. It is very much a truly Malaysian experience that shouldn’t be missed. Malaysians have carved an identity out of their ‘mamaks’ and Roti & Rice is one of those establishments that deserve praise, and the best part is that it is open 24 hours a day.
