Malaysia National Musuem
by: Janice Kou

Located atop a hill at Jalan Travers, the National Museum (Muzium Negara) is the prime local museum in Malaysia. This regal structure was designed with classical Malay architecture in mind. Set up in 1963, the museum exists to store Malaysia’s cultural heritage items and also as an acting learning centre of historical knowledge.

All visitors’ experiences begin upon arrival at the outside of the National Museum. Ancient models of transportation such as trains and vintage cars are displayed outside the museum for viewing. Visitors then venture inside to see many more attractions. The main five galleries inside the Museum provide interesting and different insights as to how Malaysia has culturally evolved over the years. These five are the Historical Gallery, Metalwork & Musical Instruments Gallery, Cultural Gallery, National Sports Gallery and the Natural History Gallery.

Its facilities include a conservation laboratory where ancient works of arts can be preserved and cleaned by art experts. There is also a library containing more than 6,500 titles for purposes of research and study in archaeology, ethnology, natural history and other similar fields. Inside, a photographic studio contains slides and negatives on various subjects of interest and importance to the museum. There are also impressive replicas of grand Malay palaces on the grounds. Many other types of displays and exhibits enable visitors to relate to the rich cultures and traditions of Malaysia. Among these are olden weapons, currency, arts and crafts.

Once nearing the exit of the National Museum, a collection of unusual souvenir gifts is available for viewing and purchase at the Museum Shop. Be “edutained” in a stimulating environment that encourages heritage awareness. Unique gadgets and clever devices are also available at a price; as are books, compact discs and special publications that cater to varied interests of the visitors. No matter the object, all the souvenirs at the museum possess artistry and historical significance.

Themed exhibitions are held from time to time at the National Museum. Such events held at the museum include examples like the Malaysian Maritime and Archaeology Exhibitions. The museum is located at Jalan Damansara, Kuala Lumpur and is opened daily from 9am to 6pm. Admission for adults is at RM1 per entry and children below twelve years of age go in for free.
