The National Science Centre, over 1,000 interactive exhibits!
by: Janice Kou

The National Science Centre (Pusat Sains Negara) was officiated on 29 th November 1996 and ceremoniously opened by the former Prime Minister of Malaysia, YAB Dato Seri Dr. Mahathir bin Mohamad.

Located at Bukit Kiara in the entertainment sector of Kuala Lumpur, the National Science Centre possesses a unique structure that resembles a curtailed cone that is capped by triangular metal elements, creating a spherical dome. The centre is basically an institution for informal learning and to promote awareness and interests towards science and technology.

The different exhibits located within the National Science Centre are designed to stimulate the mindsets of visitors and encourage them to take an active interest in science and technology. The various galleries are based on different themes, which are seemingly categorized into two groups, namely 'Basics Sciences' and 'Technology'. The main reason for the conception of this educational science centre is to link science and technology to everyday life, knowledge and our daily routines.

The National Science Centre showcases more than 1,000 interactive exhibits; housed in 12 distinctive galleries, namely:

  • Aquarium
Visitors experience a walk in an “underwater” experience and enjoy a spectacle of varied tropical and fresh water fish.

  • Environmental Odyssey

  • Children Educational Centre

  • Thinking Machine
it is explained how today’s computers, telecommunications, and advanced machineries make our lives easier and more fun!

  • Future World
A world of highly advanced technology that encourages visitors to explore and understand how technology has plainly affected their lives.

  • ScienceEducationPark
This park is specially catered to the learning needs of students in the fields of Botanical Science, Zoology, and Agricultural Science. Students will be able to have hands-on learning for various types of plants and trees. Land and aquatic animals like the ostrich, ornamental chicken (ayam serama), rabbit, deer, sheep and duck are reared in the park and aquaculture pond; giving opportunities for visitors to observe and learn.

At the National Science Centre, exhibits are designed with the concept of children’s self-learning in mind. The displays are visitor-friendly and repeated visits only serve to feed you more exclusive and exotic information that you might have missed out on the initial visit. Visiting hours are on Saturdays to Thursdays from 9am - 5pm, and the latest entry into the centre is restricted at 4pm. Admission charges for adults are RM6 each, whereas it costs only RM3 for children per entry. To find out if the National Science Centre will be opened on festive and public holidays, look out for announcements that will be made in our local media. For enquiries, you can also contact the centre at 03-20921150.
