Under The Sea In The City
by: Sophia

Aquaria KLCC is a relatively new addition to Kuala Lumpur’s list of tourist attractions. It is located right in the heart of the city at the KL Convention Centre which is a mere 10 minutes walk from the Petronas Twin Towers. Getting there is simple as it is accessible by LRT, bus and other modes of public transportation around KL.

This RM60 million aquarium is the first commercial aquarium in Kuala Lumpur. It is the perfect place to bring the kids for a discovery experience. There are an estimated 5,000 aquatic and marine animals from over 150 difference species being exhibited at Aquaria KLCC. These interesting creatures are not only found in Malaysia but all over the world.

The aquarium boasts 19 tanks covering over 5,500 square meters which makes it one of the largest (if not the largest) in the world. All tanks have various environments to facilitate the different species of fishes from various parts of the world.

The theme centres around two of the world’s major rainforests, Malaysia and the Amazon. The entire exhibit brings you on a journey through the misty mountains, along majestic rivers, into the lush rainforest to the marsh lands and finally the spectacular coral reefs which spreads out to the deep blue sea. It is an exciting journey that showcases the captivating creatures of the sea and you get to witness it without having to submerge yourself into the ominous salty waters.

The aquarium also features the latest in technology. There are discovery kiosks set up which provides “live” video footage to make the experience more interesting. It is truly a place to discover life under the sea.

Opening hours are from 10am to 10pm daily and the admission fee is RM38 for adults and RM26 for children aged 3 to 12. Locals who hold the MyKad (Malaysian Identification Card) need only pay RM28 for adults and RM22 for children. It is slightly on the costly side but it is an experience not to be missed for those who are intrigued by the wonders of the sea.
