An old map in 1881 shows Merchant Bridge later replaced by Read Bridge to give greater height over the Singapore Rover to allow “tongkangs” (boats) to pass beneath it during high tide. W.H.M. Read Singapore’s pioneer and businessman laid the first cylinder in 1887 at the bridge which was officially opened by the Governor on 18 April 1889.
