Home to niche dining and partying venues (including Zouk, revamped at SGD 7 million), a cave-like cellar and a premier spa, the vibes are palpable in this part of town!
History Robertson Quay was originally named after Dr. J Murray Robertson, a prominent Municipal Councillor. It was previously just a muddy swampland but had reclamation works done to it in the 19th century, as the result of the rapid growth in trade and population along the Singapore river. Jiak Kim Street was also named after a government official, Tan Jiak Kim. Tan Jiak Kim was the grandson of Tan Kim Seng and a Municipal Commissioner as well as a member of the Legislative Council.
Today All 51 hectares of Robertson Quay today have been transformed into a collection of residences, hotels, shops, restaurants, clubs and cultural institutions. Jiak Kim Street’s many godowns have also been converted into commercial buildings, restaurants and pubs although the layout is kept.
Highlights One of the most prominent places to visit in Jiak Kim Street is as mentioned, the newly remodeled Zouk. One not so well-known fact about Zouk’s buildings is that they used to be warehouses and when the management first took up the place, they also had to undertake the task of reconstructing the three huge erections in their dilapidated conditions. From that battered state to its present day nearly undisputable reign as the number one hotspot in all of Asia, it has surely been a great leap indeed!
