About The Keppel district in Singapore is well-known for its world-class port at Keppel Harbour that is handled by PSA International. The Keppel Harbour refers to the stretch of water between Singapore 's mainland and the islands of Sentosa and Pulau Brani. Keppel, as a district, includes the island of Pulau Brani and certain parts of Tanjong Pagar.
History Keppel Harbour used to be inhabited by the Orang Lauts, which refer to sea gypsies in Malay, and was first noted by Sir Stamford Raffles in 1819. The district is named after Captain Henry Keppel came to Singapore and helped to clear the Straits of pirates. Whilst based in Singapore, he discovered the deep water anchorage that came to be the new harbour of Singapore, which was completed in 1886.
New Harbour Road was renamed Keppel Road in 1900.
Pulau Brani means ' Island of the Brave' in Malay. There used to be a tin smelting plant on the island in the 1890s and was owned by the Straits Trading Company. In 1971, the island housed a naval base for the then Singapore Maritime Command and was subsequently named Brani Naval Base. The naval base was closed down in 2000.
