History: Punggol which is spelt “punggul” in Malay refers to the action of hurling sticks at the branches of fruit trees to loosen the fruit from its stem. It also refers to a place where fruits and forest produce are offered sold wholesale.
In the past, Punggol was also used for rubber planting, poultry farming and pig rearing until poultry and pig farming were phased out from the 1970’s.
Residential: This relatively new waterfront housing estate consists of housing types that are varied; with a higher proportion of quality design HDB flats, executive condominiums and private housing.
Place of Interest: There are many parks here and water recreational activities. There are also plans for a 15-metre wide coastal promenade along three rivers: Sungei Serangoon, Sungei Punggol and a new river created between Punggol and Coney Island.
