A hop, skip and jump away from the Yishun MRT station in Singapore’s northern satellite town, Northpoint is conveniently located at the bus interchange as well; it is not surprising that the grounds of Northpoint are constantly busy.

One of the main entrances to this shopping mall is via the underpass from the MRT station. This is used frequently and by many as a safe and convenient route option to the bus interchange. This busy entrance to the shopping centre is also a favoured location for many buskers showcasing their talent.

Built in 1992, Northpoint is considered the first major suburban shopping centre. It will certainly bring sweet memories to adults in their mid twenties now at the thought of how this mall was a cool hangout spot once upon a time. Northpoint was refurbished in 2001 and is now a size of 150,000 square feet and seven floors. It houses over 90 shops with a great mix of food outlets and fashion stores. Its anchor tenants include The Food Mall, Cold Storage, Popular Bookstore and John Little. Northpoint indeed meets the everyday needs of a Yishun resident.

First I head to Singapore’s only Esprit factory outlet here in Northpoint. You will find great bargains as prices ranges from $10 to $90 dollars, all a tad cheaper compared to the products in the normal Esprit outlets. It is advisable that you do not end your shopping spree there. A perfume shop, Spex, caters to perfume fans that may be on a tight budget. Spex sells miniature perfume bottles and samples for as low as $5. If you are lucky enough, you might even find classic perfumes such as Kenzo’s Flower or Armani’s Red Jeans in stock.

Northpoint is a magnet especially for the youngsters. Within walking distance, Northpoint attracts the students of the eight primary and secondary schools in the district. Many of these kids can be seen hanging out in the video arcade shops and snack outlets selling Japanese goodies such as crunchy takoyaki and bubble tea.

To end the trip, pop into Golden Village Cineplex, Yishun 10 next door and catch the latest Tamil movies as well as the latest Hollywood flicks.

Northpoint is truly a thriving suburban shopping centre worth the visit!
