If you are unfamiliar with the in and outs of Katong, chances are that you heading to Parkway Parade will not be one of those trips that you make regularly.

Opened since the mid 1980s, Parkway Parade is considered Singapore’s first major suburban shopping mall. It has indeed gone through a major transformation from the plain and the dowdy to what is now an urban, chic look. For a suburban mall, it has a group of stores you are more likely to find in town or in the Holland Village area such as shops like Topshop and Dorothy Perkins including the Gramophone CD shop. Food lovers will also be satisfied by the wine shop and gourmet butchery, Espirito Santo and Fish Mart Sakuraya. Parkway’s key tenants also include Giant, Isetan, Best Denki and Cold Storage.

You could certainly not miss Scoopz serving especially handmade ice cream. They are served solid and with a satisfying texture with generous savings as they are considered slightly cheaper than the usual ice cream vendors such as Haagen Daaz and Gelare. Snack stalls such as Ham Jing Pang from Treats, known for its rough dough fritters, are also available for one and all. You can choose from the plain salty version to the sweet ones with green or red bean filling, all just as tasty as the other.

With the many conveniences that Parkway has, many of young couples crowd this mall up for meals and necessities especially on weekends. This is truly a one-stop shopping destination. Parkway has everything from apparels to salons to food and groceries. Not forgetting the kids, Parkway is kid friendly with craft’s centre such as Growing Paints and the Lego Education Centre, Kawai Music School and including fencing school at Z Fence that one could enrol their children to.

On the down side, Parkway’s location is not easily accessible by public transport. There is a shuttle bus that takes passengers there from the Bedok MRT Station but unfortunately, it only operates on weekends. In addition, parking fares here are quite expensive. On weekends, parking from 10am to 6pm costs as much as $1.30 for the first hour and 40 cents for every 15 minutes thereafter.

Nevertheless, Parkway, with its mixture of shopping activities and its haphazard layout, lies unmistakably a certain quaint charm about it.
