“Tui Na” Massage literally means “push and grasp” aims to establish a more harmonious flow of Qi (life energy) through massage and hand manipulation techniques applied on various pressure points on the body to heal itself naturally. Massotherapy refers to the therapeutic use of massage as a treatment for certain illnesses or diseases. Tui Na Massage is an effective form of massotherapy.
Tui Na works on the energy channels and points, using the same principles as acupuncture except that the hands and fingers are used instead of needles. Through a combination of massage and acupressure, Tui Na applies pressure to acupoints, meridians and groups of muscles or nerves to remove blockages that prevent the free flow of Qi. Many health problems are caused by such blockages, leading to pain, swelling and the build-up of toxins. The therapist may also use Chinese herbs to facilitate quicker healing. Sessions last from 30 minutes to 1 hour, with the number of sessions varying with the problem at hand. The patient will usually feel more relaxed and energised by the treatment.
Tui Na works holistically, treating the mind through the body and vice versa. It leaves you with a deep sense of physical and mental relaxation, revitalisation and well-being. Tui Na is best suited for rectifying certain types of chronic pain, musculoskeletal conditions and stress-related disorders.
Scope of Treatment (治疗范围):
We routinely care of our pregnant patient’s until they are in their 13th week of pregnancy (End of First Trimester). In the case of recurrent miscarriage, we usually monitor and care for our patients until the end of the 28th week of pregnancy (End of Second Trimester), however in some special cases it might be even longer. In most cases, the Traditional Chinese Medicine remedy can be suspended once you reached the 13th week of pregnancy (End of First Trimester). However, many of our patients like to continue with the pregnancy care treatment throughout their pregnancy.

Shingles is an infection of a nerve and the area of skin around it, caused by the herpes varicella-zostervirus (VZV). The same virus also causes chickenpox.
Shingles can occur at any age, but is most common in people who are over 50. It can affect any part of the body. Areas commonly affected include the neck, shoulder, upper back, chest, abdomen, and in some cases, even the face or eyes. It causes a painful rash which develops into itchy blisters. It can cause severe nerve pain that lasts for many months, or even years, after the rash has gone.
Many people may get chickenpox during childhood, but after recovery, the virus remains dormant (inactive) in the nervous system. The immune system stops the virus from becoming active. However, later in life it can be reactivated and cause shingles.
It is not known exactly why the shingles virus is reactivated at a later stage in life to cause shingles, but a potential reason include having lowered immunity.
It is not possible to catch shingles from someone with this condition; however, you can catch chickenpox if you’ve never had it before.
An episode of shingles will normally last for 2 to 4 weeks. The patient will generally feel a tingling sensation in the affected area at first. This will be followed by pain, and then a rash.
Sometimes there may be additional symptoms including confusion, fatigue, fever, headache, upset stomach, abdominal pains, etc.
A number of complications can occur as a result of shingles. They are more likely if you have a weakened immune system or are elderly.
Post-herpetic neuralgia is the most common complication resulting from shingles. Some patients experience severe nerve pain if the nerves are damaged. The pain can last for a very long time; even years after the rash had disappeared.
Shingles is explained in traditional Chinese medicine as the presence of pathogenic damp, heat and wind. It usually occurs along the liver or gall bladder meridians on the exterior of the body. If damp is predominant, the lesions are more likely to be in the lower part of the body, with more fluid discharge from the blisters. If heat predominates, blisters show more heat and redness and the pain is more severe. If wind predominates, the lesions are more likely to be in the upper part of the body with a more dominant itching sensation.
TCM physiciansaddress the patient’s bodily condition, or “internal environment” directly. The diagnosis of “damp heat” actually relates to the condition of the patient’s system, which allows the virus to breed and create the outbreak. This diagnosis also allows the practitioner to provide the patient with practical, simple guidelines on what to do to help speed their recovery through means such as dietary advice (e.g. hot and spicy foods, fried foods and alcohol should be avoided during a shingles outbreak as they contribute to further “dampness and heat” within the body.)
There is no cure for shingles in the perspective of western medicine, but treatment can help ease the symptoms of shingles. Treatment options include:
TCM treatment of shingles is based on pattern differentiation according to the pathogenic factor and the meridian involved.
Traditional Chinese Medicine has proven to be very effective in treating shingles, especially when in the first stages. Not only can TCM treatment alleviate the excruciating pain and treat the blisters and rash, having TCM treatment during an shingles outbreak can significantly reduce the risk of post-herpetic neuralgia.
Likewise, post-herpetic neuralgia, though a very stubborn and painful condition, can be treated with acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine remedies. Again, it is much better to go for treatment sooner rather than later in this condition as well.
According to TCM, shingles usually affects older patients with weak constitution, or younger patients who are suffering from exhaustion. The more pronounced the weakness of the patient, the greater the likelihood of complications, and the more prolonged the course of the disease is likely to be. Unless the underlying condition isdealt with successfully, the possibility of relapse or prolongation of the disease is very high.
Our TCM physicians had plenty of experience in treating this illness. If you are suffering from shingles, please come to our clinic for treatment as soon as possible. We will administer TCM treatment on you to aid your recovery.
Gua Sha (pronounced “gwa sha,”) is an East Asian healing technique. Gua means to scrape or rub. Sha is a ‘reddish, elevated, millet-like skin rash’. Sha is the term used to describe Blood stasis in the subcutaneous tissue before and after it is raised as petechiae. Gua Sha is the technique that intentionally raises Sha rash or petechiae.
Gua Sha is usually used when a patient has pain whether associated with an acute or chronic disorder. There may be aching, tenderness and/or a knotty feeling in the muscles. Palpation reveals Sha when normal finger pressure on a patient’s skin causes blanching that is slow to fade. In addition to resolving musculo skeletal pain, Gua Sha is used to treat any chronic disorder involving pain, congestion of Qi and Blood.
In most cases the patient feels immediate improvement in their condition particularly in their pain or sense of constraint. Gua Sha moves stuck Qi and Blood, releases the exterior mimicking sweating, and moves Fluids. It is a valuable treatment for both external and internal pain, and facilitates the resolution of both acute and chronic disorders.
Gua Sha is a completely safe technique, but it is serious medicine. Knowing when to use it and what to expect from treatment is as important as good technique. People who live in chronic pain often erect emotional defenses to cope with it or can feel completely hopeless. Having that pain ‘touched’ and relieved can be unsettling, even amazed. After treatment, it is best to be moderate in activity after treatment, even rest.
Prevention is better than cure!

Acupuncture is one of several ancient Chinese medical procedures. It is believed to help relieve pain and treat diseases by restoring the normal flow of energy through the body. A typical acupuncture treatment involves the insertion of hair-thin needles into specific points on the body to elicit a healing response. The sterilised and disposable needles are so thin that most people feel nothing more than a slight tingling sensation when they are inserted.. Each treatment lasts approximately 20 to 30 minutes. Heat stimulation and cupping used together with the needles improves the efficacy of healing.
The number and frequency of treatments will vary from patient to patient. Some symptoms may be relieved after the first treatment, while others may take 10 to 20 treatments depending on the severity of the existing condition. In general, a disorder such as having an ongoing pain for many years requires two to three treatments a week for the first few weeks. Gradually, the frequency can be reduced to once or twice a month.
Epilepsy, fertility problems, gynecologic disorders, headaches, migraines, nausea, paralysis, PMS, sciatica, backache, sexual dysfunction, sinus problems, post-stroke syndrome, tendonitis, frozen shoulder and any pain condition.
As acupuncture needles penetrate the skin, they are regarded as invasive procedures, and therefore not without risk. However injuries are rare among patients treated by trained practitioners. We use sterile needles that are disposable and used only once. Regarding the relative safety of acupuncture as compared with other treatments, the side effects of acupuncture are extremely low.
Cupping therapy is an ancient Chinese form of alternative medicine in which a local suction is created on the skin. Practitioners believe this mobilizes blood flow in order to promote healing. Suction is created using heat (fire). It is known in local languages as “baguan” 拔罐.It is used to treat various forms of pain Eg. Backache. Cupping also is used on back, neck, shoulder and other musculoskeletal conditions.
Cupping is not advised over skin ulcers or to the abdominal or sacral regions of pregnant women. It is also highly recommended to drink plenty of water after cupping to help move the blood and other fluids through the affected area. The discoloration left by the cups is normally caused by the painless bruising due to the dispelling of stagnant blood.
