Many of you have surely heard the quotation "the money is in the list" and many internet gurus are continuously insisting on list creation to leverage your business. Many resources, software, reports and e-books are created around this matter. But is list creation that important for any e-business?. In my humble opinion, I think it is. Although, I'd like to point out some considerations regarding this matter.
I think list building, although important for any business, it's not that easy task, and more important, not that easy to maintain a healthy subscribers list. Let me make clear my point…
First, in order to attract a lead or subscriber, you need to attract him or her with a freebie which needs to be a high quality resource, either a report, an e-book, a software, etc. relevant for the subject of your website or the interest of your visitor in exchange for his (her) e-mail.
Second, you ideally should reflect credibility. Although, this quality can be built with time during the mailing process, but at least, some trust and confidence you must reflect to have an interesting subscription rate. This can be achieved trough a professional website and a nice looking squeeze page and, of course, a good copy. Nothing is more important than this last point, but this a matter of a special discussion.
Third, once your list in process of being created, you need some previously created mails in your autoresponder to start building your credibility. Some affiliate marketers do not agree on the necessity of building credibility and even recommend to immediately start sending sales pitches to you lists. I believe this would increase your unsubscription rate. I prefer to stick to a more personal relationship with your customers and subscribers and a real and honest care for them. In time, this will increase your sales conversion.
In summary, I don't think is a good idea for a newbie to try to start building lists in their initial stages of his learning curve. I mean, it is first necessary to build on his own knowledge and abilities to really provide content and credibility to his subscribers. I think that one should not see a list only as a mean to make money. I believe that making money is fine, but your recommendations must be really good. You should ideally test the product before recommending it. This product or service should bring real value to the business of your list. The money is certainly in the list, but your trustfulnes is in the list too.
One final word. Building lists is certainly a difficult task, no matter what the sales pitches of the products on list building say. But, there is an easy way to build a list: Joint Ventures Giveaways. These are events organized for a certain group of marketers to help others to build their lists. You can participate for free with your own freebie and take advantage of the leveraged advertising the event creates.
