While blankets are a staple in any layette, there are some things to keep in mind while shopping for your little angel.



The baby blanket choices that are available in stores are astounding. They come in all shapes and sizes, colors and patterns, designs and fabrics. It can be difficult to choose from one or another based on safety reasons alone. Look for blankets that are made of a solid piece of fabric, avoid those that are loosely knit with large holes. Choose blankets that are wide enough and long enough to be tucked under the mattress, there by avoiding the chance of the baby being tangled up while sleeping or playing.

An important attribute for baby blankets is for them to be flame resistant. Most of those that are for sale in a store will be, just as pajamas are. However, hand made blankets will not be treated with any flame resistant chemicals. It is best to not use hand made blankets while your child is sleeping and perhaps not under your direct supervision.

While these are a few tips to help you buy a safe blanket, this is by no means meant to discourage you from purchasing your dream baby blanket. Go ahead, splurge on lace and embroidery, cute characters and fancy edging, and just be sure that you are not sacrificing your baby's safety or comfort. These extras should be well sewn and soft to the touch.

As every parent knows, the weather can be very unpredictable. Be sure to purchase enough baby blankets to allow for wet, cold or other types of foul weather. A couple of extras that are kept in the baby bag or the car should suffice. You will also find as your baby grows that their baby blankets are useful well into childhood, as blankets, forts and future polishing rags (don't ever throw a blanket out).

As your baby grows into a toddler you may find that a particular baby blanket is being cherished and loved more than the others. This is the perfect opportunity to turn it into a stuffed "lovey" for your little darling. This will help the blanket last longer, especially if you can turn it into more than one play thing.
