There are many resources available to help you in your choice of holiday. There are travel agents, books and brochures, to name but a few. In the age of the internet, this research can also be done in the comfort of your own home.
As there are so many options available to you, it is a good idea to have a short list of destinations, as well as an idea on budget before you start. That way you won’t end up booking yourself on a world cruise on the QE2, when really all you can afford is two nights B&B in Wales.
It is important to think about what kind of holiday would best suit your current lifestyle and interests. Are you looking for something action packed and full-on, or is the prospect of spending hours upon hours just lazing on your sun bed by the pool much more appealing?
You will need to consider the climate of your destination at the time you will be there. Although the majority of us like it hot, make sure that you are aware of the maximum local day time temperatures. You will not feel so much like exploring your surroundings in very hot conditions. Likewise, you may not want to sit by the pool all day if it is too cold. Check that your destination isn’t in the middle of its hurricane or rain season when you are planning to be there. It is also crucial to check if you need any special vaccinations before travelling especially to more exotic locations.
You will also need to think about who your travel party consists of. A family or group taking a holiday will require different facilities to a single person, or couple. Also think about what type of people your destination is most popular with. If you have a young family you do not want to end up in a complex where all the other occupants are there to go clubbing every night. Similarly, if you are a young couple, you will perhaps not want to spend the entire holiday surrounded by the over 60’s.
Take into account the length of journey to your destination. If you are flying, remember to check how long the transfer from the airport is. Children, no matter how well behaved normally, can all turn into little horrors when faced with a long journey. The prospect of that far away location can easily loose its appeal when your child will not stop screaming. Make sure you pack some small toys and games along with snacks and drinks to keep your little angels happy.
It is important to check how far all the major facilities are from your hotel or apartment.Find out how far is it to the beach, bar, café’s and shops. If you are more elderly or disabled, it is helpful to know if there are a lot of stairs or steps to climb and what additional help is available. Is everything that you want to see and do close to your destination, or do you need transport when you get there? It is helpful to know what the hire car rates are and also what documents you will need to take with you. Check if the local busses run frequently, can you hire bicycles etc.
What about dietary requirements? Does anyone in your travel party have any special requirements? If so, you will need to check that your destination can accommodate you. It may make more sense to go self catering. What if your chosen destination only offers local cuisine? Could you stomach sheep’s eyes? For some people it may be a comfort to know that English food is also available.
You will also want to think about safety. Does your chosen location offer a safety deposit box to keep your valuables, money and passports in? Some destinations advise that you do not leave the complex, are you happy with this restriction? Are there qualified childminders available if you want some time away from the children? Does your holiday destination have any dangerous animals or insects that you need to be aware of? What medical facilities are within close reach? Although none of us want to think about having to go to hospital while we are on holiday, there is always a possibility that you may need to. As the saying goes, “It’s better to be safe than sorry”.
So now you have taken on all my advice, the rest is down to you. Make sure that your final choice has ticked as many of your boxes as possible, and above all enjoy yourselves wherever you decide to go.
