Cough Variant Asthma is a unique type of asthma that gets its name from its only symptom. Most asthma types have a specific set of asthma symptoms that are very typical. The difference between asthma types is not usually in what symptoms you have, but in what causes those symptoms to show up. So while there is usually a normal set of asthma symptoms, the causes of those symptoms can be different for everybody.
Cough Variant Asthma Is Different
With most types of asthma there are four major symptoms that usually show up as listed below:
1. Coughing - this is usually what is called a wet cough because gunk (or mucus) is present when you cough.
2. Wheezing - usually when you breathe out
3. Tightness in the chest
4. Shortness of breath
But cough variant asthma is different. Instead of the usual four symptoms, coughing is the only symptom. And instead of the usual asthma cough, this cough is a very dry cough with no mucus coming out. This cough can also last for a long time, perhaps for many weeks. It can also be a loud cough, what is called a barking cough. This type of asthma is often misdiagnosed because there are no other typical asthma symptoms.
What is Asthma
Having cough variant asthma or any type of asthma means that the airways or breathing tubes going to your lungs are very sensitive to specific things. The name given to these things is your asthma triggers. Coming into contact with any of these things really gets your airways upset. And when your airways get upset, there is a very predictable list of things that usually happen.
1. There is swelling on the inside of your airways which makes them smaller.
2. The muscles on the outside of your airways try to squeeze the airways shut, making them even smaller.
3. Mucus, or what I prefer to call gunk, is formed on the insides of your airways.
With cough variant asthma, your airways do get irritated but not with the same results. They don't become so small so that you have trouble breathing. The muscles around the airways don't appear to tighten up so you don't feel the tightness in the chest. There is also no gunk being produced inside of the airways. The only symptom is the very persistent cough.
Asthma Triggers
If you have cough variant asthma, the causes of your asthma (or triggers) responsible for your chronic cough are similar to the causes for other types of asthma. No matter what type of asthma you have, you will also have your own personal list of things that your airways really hate.
If you come in contact with or do any of those things on your list, your airways will get really irritated. In the case of cough variant asthma, the result will be your chronic cough. The following things are a partial list of possible asthma triggers that might be what irritates your airways:
1. Smoke - all types
2. Allergens - like grass or pollen, etc
3. Aerosol sprays - like hair spray or deodorants, etc
4. Stress - or other strong emotions
5. Specific foods - could pretty much be anything
6. Dust mites - in your bedding, carpets, etc
7. Pet dander - all pets give off dander
8. Mold - both indoor and outdoor
9. Different types of air pollution
10. Weather - could be certain types of weather or changes in the weather
11. Cockroach droppings
12. and the list goes on
Any of the things on the above list could could be the cause of your cough variant asthma. In fact, you could have any number of those things on your list. You might even have an asthma trigger that is not on that list. Everybody has their own list and the way that you are affected by something on the list will be different from the way that it affects somebody else. Having cough variant asthma will see some people get irritated airways a lot more often than others.
Asthma is a very serious condition and the number of people that have it is actually going up despite the billions being spent on prescription medications.
Cough Variant Asthma Treatment
Imagine your airways constricting, and not being able to breathe. A silent suffocation. This is what a day in the life of an asthma sufferer feels like. Most asthma patients live a limited lifestyle due to the restrictions that their disease places on them. Not only do must they avoid particular activities, but some may even have to avoid certain locations. Some asthma sufferers feel as if they have to live their lives in a box and cannot get past the limitations that they have set for themselves. Most asthma patients use asthma treatment inhalers to deliver the proper medicine to their lungs when they feel an attack coming on, or they need breathing relief in general. For the asthma patient who lacks insurance, these inhalers can be quite an expensive and many not be attainable at all. With the combined expense, lack of relief for some, and the pursuit of a safer treatment, many patients have begun to research natural asthma treatments.
One of the best and most effective natural asthma treatments is to avoid triggers that can induce an asthma attack. Depending on the severity of the asthma, triggers may be different areas and things that you should avoid. Yes, this particular natural asthma treatment is, of course, based on trial and error of the sufferers personal experiences with attacks and asthma symptoms, but, overall, is the best natural asthma treatment.
There are many triggers that a person with asthma should avoid. Some of these triggers include extreme climates, smoking, certain pollens, certain types of furniture as well as certain types of flooring. It all depends on the person. Smoking is also a trigger for many asthma attacks. If smoking triggers the onset of symptoms, refrain from doing it. It is also very important to avoid other smokers as well. Extreme climates can induce the onset of asthmatic symptoms, so you want to avoid hot and cold activities. Though a very simple technique in natural asthma treatments, it may not always be easy to refrain from the things that cause our symptoms, but we will be much healthier and happier if we do.
It is possible to live a long time, with all the fullness that the asthma patient desires, if one follows the natural asthma treatment. Of course, there is the possibility that natural asthma treatments may not be successful alone and that medication and other treatment options may have to be administered, but, if the asthma is mild enough, the natural asthma treatment method should be effective.
Sometimes, the asthma patient must avoid things that he or she love in order to stay healthy. This experience may not always be a pleasant one, but using the natural asthma treatment will allow the patient to be healthier and experience less symptoms. In the long run, the lungs will be able to function with more stability and the life that the asthma sufferer leads will be fuller.
As with any asthma treatment, the patient should consult their doctor with the fact that they would like to attempt the natural asthma treatment. It is to be expressed that this asthma treatment alone may not always work independently for the sufferer, but is definitely worth a try.
