How to Train a Puppy
For whatever reason, some people think of crate training puppies as cruel or inhumane. Nothing is further from the truth. When it's done right, crate training makes raising a happy, well-behaved dog so much easier.

Using crate training to train your new puppy is both effective and humane. It helps establish his place in your home, giving him a strong feeling of security. It not only gives your puppy his own special den - it also helps you establish how he is to behave in your home.

To get you started, here are five tips for crate training your new puppy:

1. Never, ever use the crate to punish your dog.

Your dog's crate should always be a safe and happy place. He should like going there. It's where he can rest and relax. If he misbehaves, you should simply lead him calmly to his crate. Take a minute to talk to him so he knows you aren't mad or angry with him.

2. Make his crate a comfy, cozy place to be.

His favorite blanket will make a soft bed. Add a safe toy or bone to chew on. Be sure to give him a tasty treat whenever he gets inside. It should be a place where your puppy can rest and relax, so don't put food and water inside.

3. Never make your puppy spend too much time in his crate.

Dogs are social. They are pack animals and want to be with the rest of their pack. This means you. Never force your puppy to spend all day locked in his crate.

4. Consistency is the key.

If you are using your crate to train your new puppy, consistency is vital. You can stop him from jumping on people by redirecting him - crating him each time he jumps on someone.

Don't forget - this isn't a punishment. Let family and guests visit your puppy while he's in his crate. Have them say hi and talk to him for a minute.

5. Use a schedule when crate training your puppy.

Your puppy is naturally a light sleeper and, much like a child, needs extra rest. This faithful companion is usually "on guard" and ready to protect you if necessary. By scheduling regular naptimes during the day, your dog is able to really relax and get the sleep he needs in a safe environment.

As you can see, crate training is really a great way to train your new puppy. You're giving him his own special space. You're also able to define your role as the pack leader, and that's the first, important step to training any dog.

Crate training puppies isn't just humane it lets you train your puppy with love and compassion without much of the drama that usually comes with owning a dog. It helps establish your role as pack leader, and it helps you to build a strong relationship with your new family member.
