Many children grew up watching Disney's classic animated fairy tales and stories such as Snow White, Cinderella, Aladdin, and Cinderella, to name a few. Young little girls usually imagine themselves as the princesses in the movies and the little boys the princes. If you are a fan of Disney's animated movies, you would be glad to know that later this year, on the 11th of December 2009, Disney will again show to the world what they do best by creating another animated movie called The Princess and the Frog.
Disney's Princess and the Frog movie is based from E.D Baker's fairy tale book The Frog Princess. You are all familiar with the prince who turned into a frog and who returned to being a prince after he has been kissed by a princess. For Disney's Princess and the Frog movie, the story is a bit similar but with a twist. When the frog prince asked the princess to kiss him, the princess turned into a frog herself and the prince remained as a frog. This made them share a common goal—to find the priestess who can help them turn back to their original forms.
Common to almost all Disney animated films are the comic parts wherein animals usually talk and have their own distinct personalities. If the Lion King has a humble warthog and a know-it-all meerkat, The Little Mermaid has a singing crustacean and a nervous colourful fish, and Aladdin has a mischievous monkey, The Princess and the Frog has a romantic firefly and an alligator musician.
The setting is in Louisiana specifically in the French Quarter, an old and very famous town in New Orleans. The adventures of these two royalties in their amphibious forms brought them to different magical and mystical places in Louisiana and also in the majestic rivers of Mississippi.
The main characters of Disney's Princess and the Frog movie are Princess Tiana, the 19-year-old princess and the suave and fun-loving Prince Naveen from Maldonia, who is in his early twenty's. The villain in this animated film is Doctor Facilier, a voodoo doctor who turned Prince Naveen to a frog. He is like Aladdin's Jafar and Snow White's or Cinderella's wicked step mothers. And of course, Princess Tiana and Prince Naveen need someone to turn them back to humans again, and this is where the fairy godmother of this animated movie comes in. She is a voodoo priestess who is two centuries old and her name is Mama Odie. Other characters include Tiana's rival named Charlotte La Bouff, the firefly named Ray, and the alligator called Louis who plays the trumpet and sings jazz.
Disney also prides itself in their timeless songs and music. The songs are usually sung by each character and the lyrics relate to the character's feelings or role in the movie. The Princess and the Frog is like a Broadway musical which includes the songs "Down in New Orleans," "Almost There," "If I'm Human," and "Dig a Little Deeper," to list down a few.
Disney's Princess and the Frog movie will surely be another hit among children, and even adults who have the heart of a child. It has the formula which is observed in every successful Disney animated fairy tale—magic, humor, music, romance, adventure, and the victory of good over evil.
