Aging Problems
If you're one of the many people that suffer from chronic pain you'll need all the help you can get for managing it successfully. Chronic pain is defined as pain that doesn't go away, unlike acute pain that will dissipate as the injury, or other medical condition, heals. After a long period of time of dealing with chronic pain it often becomes a combination of body and mind discomfort that is very painful for the individual.

There are several steps you can take to help you manage the chronic pain in your life. First, one of the most important things to do is discuss the situation with your doctor on a regular basis. You may be taking some kind of medication that your doctor approved, either prescribed or over the counter. If you find that the medication is diminishing in effectiveness over time, you need to let your doctor know so that he can help you find alternatives. It's essential to be in constant communication with your doctors.

Exercise is another tool to help you manage your pain. For an individual with chronic pain, it may be difficult to exercise. You may be able to find a type of exercise that you can engage in, despite the chronic pain. Exercise helps the body manage pain because it allows the body to remain flexible and toned. And, by being in good shape, you can handle the other physical problems that can be the result of chronic pain.

Some food supplements promise relief from pain -- make sure that you research the product and discuss your findings with your physician. Some supplements, that have not been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration(FDA), claim to relieve pain. Don't fall into the trap of taking these supplements if they either (1) do not effect your pain level, or (2) may complicate prescribed medications that you are taking under your doctor's care.

Another beneficial technique may be to introduce some relaxation techniques into your daily routine. One activity in particular that is beneficial is Yoga. Yoga not only exercises the body but also strengthens and tones your body. Additional relaxation techniques include meditation, visualization, acupuncture, and acupressure.

By relaxing your body, you learn to breathe correctly and concentrate on the health of your body. Additional stress and worries may add to your condition of chronic pain, so deal with any emotional problems promptly.

Getting support, such as joining a support group for those people suffering from chronic pain, can be helpful to the pain management. By joining a group, you'll be able to talk with other people who are going through the same emotions and feelings that you are deal with everyday. By discussing your own experience, you not only help yourself by finding other people who understand what's happening in your life, but you also help other people who need to hear what you have to say.

You don't have to deal with chronic pain all by yourself. Ask family and friends to support you if there are some things that you just can't do for yourself. By being frank about what you're going through you'll feel less alone and able to cope.

There is quite a bit of reading material that can help you gain as much information that you need for dealing with your pain. The more information that you are about what is going on in your body, the better able you'll be to deal with the pain and tolerate the effects on your life from the result of this pain.
Fibromyalgia And Chronic Pain
My photosensitivity arrived with my pain approximately 20 years ago. I owned a wonderful blue Mustang convertible and often rode to work and back with the top down. I should be ashamed to admit it but even when it was too inclement to ride with the top down, I would do it anyway and turn the heater on. My husband's favorite toy was his ski boat.

Unfortunately, all that sun exposure came to an abrupt stop for me. Rashes, fevers and diarrhea were all too high a price to pay. I also noticed an increase in joint pain.

I read a wonderful article by Dr. Daniel Wallace, a rheumatologist at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, who explained the process. It seems that for some of us who are extremely photosensitive, the sun attacks the skin cells causing the DNA to escape from the nucleus of the cells. The escaping particles or debris enter the joints. The sun can also rob the body of its immunity for a day or more.

I may be the only person here in Astoria, Ore., who doesn't complain about the long stretches of rainy weather. I love it because I don't have to slather on as much sunscreen. I still wear a hat every day because the scalp can still process those nasty rays, even on a cloudy day. Remember when you were a teen and got some of your most memorable sunburns beneath those overcast skies?

I have found some sunscreens that are tolerable, without the slip and slide effect. I have purchased sunproof clothing from the following companies and found them to be of excellent quality: LLBean.com, TravelSmith.com, SunPrecautions.com and Sahalie.com. This year, I discovered a wonderful hat company with stylish and fun hats that are made with sunproof fabric found at Wallaroohats.com. The price ranges vary for these, but you don't have to pay a fortune to be protected. Price is important because I don't have a fortune due to the fact I have not been able to work for 16 years due to this disease that came to live with me.

I miss working very much. When I became an R.N. 30 years ago, I didn't realize I would be using so much of my education to treat myself. Having a chronic illness makes this thing called life a challenge for some of us, but since we have been given little choice in the matter, why not do the best we can to win?
