When I first got word via Buddytv that Grey's Anatomy's cast had somehow been bestowed the rank of the most entertaining cast on television, I was bit surprised. Particularly considering that they were up against YouTube. I mean Sarah Oh vs The Goddess Bunny and lonely girl? It's a bit of a reach I must say.
None-the-less the gang of real-life narcissists and part time actors nailed the honor which I'm sure they just knew was coming. Do I hate Grey's Anatomy? No. Grey's Anatomy is a brilliant medical drama, expertly written and fantastically acted. It's the behind the scenes antics that make this award so hard to swallow. From the homophobic rantings of Isiah Washington, to the self indulgent, sometimes laughably arrogant rumblings of Patrick Dempsey, the cast of Grey's, acting skills with-standing, seem to slide through the scrutiny of the press on blessed roller skates.
Grey's has become sort of a phenomenon in the TV world, where other mega blockbusters (LOST, and Desperate Housewives) have begun to show signs of wear, Grey's Anatomy keeps on as one of the most successful hours of television drama on the tube. Even its reruns reel stalwart viewers in, and new episodes are greeted as food of the gods for the massive fan following the show has developed.
In the end I suppose, all that matters is what is done on screen. Actors are judged for the end product, after all, and not the shenanigans that lead up to that. Regardless, it is hard for me to dismiss hate-speech and rampant self indulgence from the mix. Grey's Anatomy may very well have the most entertaining cast on television, and in the tabloids too while they're at it.
