Most professional or student singers would love to develop a wonderful vibrato to add to their singing style. Some believe that vibrato is naturally occurring whenever anyone sings, but the is not always true. When many singers study the basics, they definitely want to add a good vibrato to their vocal technique.
Vibrato is the fluttering sound of a singer's voice that helps the singer express emotion while singing a song. Every singer has their own special version of what a vibrato should sound like, as it is a highly personal and artistic expression. When a singer practices and learns new skills, learning how to do a good vibrato should be high on the list of skills to master as a singer.
You might wonder how vibrato is produced in the throat. Keep the throat open yet close down the vocal cords at the same time. The training of your body, through good posture and tension, will also affect your ability to use the vibrato to your own best advantage.
There as many kinds of vibrato as there are languages spoken today. In some cultures, singers will sing a quickly moving vibrato, and other cultures don't promote vibrato at all, or if they do, it barely noticeable. Again, vibrato is attractive to some cultures such as China where a vibrato in a very high register sung slowly is considered beautiful, and in European style choral music the vibrato is not encouraged for singers.
When working to develop vibrato, there are a few things to keep in mind. First you will find that the development of a good vibrato does take time and practice, with a good choral vocal blend being developed through discipline when it comes to a good alignment of the singing voice. It is important to make sure that a singer who is trying to sing vibrato will have a good balance when it comes to support and to really understanding what their body is trying with this oscillation of pitch
There are several problems to watch out for when you are looking the development of your own vibrato. A wobbly vibrato can occur when there is the a lack of tonal focus or a lack of discipline in the vocal cords, causing a quavering tone in the song. A vibrato that is too fast may be caused by too much pressure at the base of the tongue and can cause a displeasing sound, while a straight tone refers to a lack of vibrato at all.
If you want to cultivate a nice vibrato, first contemplate your body posture and feet placement when you are ready to sing. Do you feel prepared to get the pitches and sounds for your songs? Do you feel prepared enough so that you as a singer can easily hit the highest notes in your songs?
There are many different methods to getting a healthy vibrato, but it all starts with good basics. Speak with your voice teacher or a singer that you know and trust so that you can find out what method he or she recommends for you. Also, any excellent online course in singing has lots of advice and exercises for you to practice, as good vibrato means good singing!
How To Find Your Singing Voice
1. Nicotine: Crowded bars are notorious for their toxic air. Not only will singing in this toxic environment ruin your voice, talking can be just as damaging. Thankfully most clubs are aware of the dangers and are actually becoming smoke-free. Quitting smoking was VERY hard to do. I wasn't ready to quit until I was ready and even then it took a couple of years.
When you're ready let me know, I'll be happy to tell you what worked for me. But that would be a whole other article.
2. Alcohol: I don't drink. I know that is just as hard to hear as a musician who does not do drugs. But I saw it as an occupational hazard. Since I liked drinking so much, I figured I would stop drinking during work. But now that I am singing so many nights every week, it just makes sense to stay sober.
Also, you'll need to look out for throat sprays and holistic remedies that contain alcohol. We all know that over the counter medicines contain some alcohol, which was one of the reasons why I don't take them. But the so called "healthy" cures will require a quick reading of the label. Alcohol dries out the vocal chords.
So if you want ruin your voice in less than 1 year - Drink and drink heavily.
3. Sugar: OK so I don't do drugs and I don't drink. But boy do I love chocolate. Included in this list could also be carbonated soda pops. So pick your spots. Chocolate before the gig is perfect for ruining your voice. Plus, if I ate enough of those really good donuts down at the German Bakery, I could get real fat and clog up my arteries. That wouldn't just ruin my voice in a year, I could ruin my whole body.
Clearly, I do not want to ruin my voice. But how can I keep my voice strong? Look here in the future for more information on how we do it. For now though, I can tell you that when I stay from all three of these, my voice repairs itself quickly and efficiently.
“I am not Dr. nor have I ever played one on TV”
- some obscure TV commercial
But I do know what works for me and all of my fellow "Saloon Singers" who I gig with all over the country for Corporate Parties and Fundraisers.
I could have easily added 7 more ways to ruin your voice for life. It takes planning and discipline. It takes commitment and focus. And best of all it can take you career and slingshot it past those who do not take care of their most valuable asset - their voice.
