Guide to the Golf
What is one of the most important things to consider when it comes to perfecting your golf swing? Although it may not strike you immediately, did you know that the shoulders are the key when it comes to making your golf swing all that it can be? It's true: when it comes to smooth, elegant, and effective golf swings, it's all in the shoulders.

The Shoulder Plays an Vital Role in Perfecting Your Golf Swing

What is the shoulders function when it comes to golf swings? When most golfing enthusiasts, novice and seasoned alike, think of golf swings, they think of stance and knees and grips, but the shoulder's role is not immediately considered. But the shoulders should receive their fair share of consideration because they are actually very important when it comes to golf swings. The next time you are watching a player swing, look at their shoulders and you will see just how much they contribute to the overall effect of the golf swing.

The Function of the Shoulder in the Golf Swing

So what just is the function of the shoulder in the golf swing? see any golfer take a swing and you will see that the shoulders are a powerful mass of muscles that can send your golf ball flying if you know how to control your swing. However, although the shoulders are a powerful force to be reckoned with, the details of their force are not so obvious. Medical researchers have pinpointed the exact function of the shoulders during a golf swing. Several electromyography studies have shown that the shoulder muscles play a large role in the force that goes into an average golf swing. More specifically, the shoulder muscles that are largely responsible for the force behind the average golf swing are known scientifically as the rotator cuff muscles, the pectorals muscles, and the latissimus dorsi.

Avoiding Shoulder Strain

Many chiropractors and other medical doctors have noted that many golfers have lower back problems. In fact, one of the most common golfer injuries reported in the United States is lower back strain, followed by wrist pain. It is important to avoid shoulder pain and strain by exercising before play, following good form, using a relaxed and comfortable grip, and wearing the correct types of shoes.

Shoulder Work to Improve Your Golf Stance and Swing

What can you do to make your shoulders work for you so that your golf stance and swing is improved? Here are some ideas to help you get the most from your shoulder work and to avoid pain and strain. One general guideline that you may find helpful is to keep your right shoulder down toward the target line. This is an especially good tip if you have been known to throw the club at your golf ball. This means that you are most likely an upper body swinger.

A Helpful Drill To Keep Your Shoulder in Check

Here is a helpful drill to help keep your shoulder in check. Make sure to keep your right arm close to your body. This will help keep your right shoulder close to your chin and closer to the target line. This form also helps keep your right shoulder moving smoothly through the shot, and it will help you complete your swing. This should also help control your shot from turning too much. Make sure to keep your head and your eyes fixed directly on your club head and let your hips move naturally during the motion. Try this drill as a warm up to your game and watch your shoulder work improve through your game.
