In 2006 there were 10,507 bike accidents in California including 155 fatal collisions. Out of those accidents, 8639 of the cyclists were male while only 1868 were female. This begs the question, are men really worse cyclists by such a large margin? Or perhaps there are other factors that explain the lopsidedness of the comparison.
In general, at least when it comes to California, males are more likely to ride a bicycle regularly than females. In fact, even females who ride a bicycle will ride it less often than the average male cyclist. However, without knowing the exact statistics; how many men ride a bike compared to how many women ride as well as how many hours each sex is likely to ride the bike in a given week; it is impossible to come to an exact conclusion. But that doesn't mean there isn't anything left to analyze.
In 2005 the Cambridge Cycling Campaign surveyed nearly 5000 respondents from Oxford and Cambridge regarding general aspects of cycling and turned up some interesting gender related results. Out of those surveyed, "men were substantially more likely than women to carry out routine maintenance on their bicycles" and "women have been found more likely than men to experience certain types of serious accident" as "they reported being substantially less able to look back over their shoulders and to tell when it is safe to pull into traffic." While this survey seems to indicate that men are safer cyclists, it is impossible to say the results would be the same if measured in California.
A year later, in 2006, Neil Osterweil of MedPage Today reported the findings of the American College of Emergency Physicians Annual Scientific Assembly and pointed out that men are "nearly 10 times more likely than women to die in a bike crash." This statistic aligns quite closely with the results seen in California; 133 males and 22 females killed in bike accidents in 2006.
It is impossible to tell whether men or women are better cyclists in California. We know that men are involved in more bike accidents, but we don't have any concrete data to compare the cycling abilities of men and women. Nonetheless, regardless of the gender, there are two things that are certainly true when it comes to cycling: it is an activity that can be enjoyed by anybody, but it is also dangerous for those that are ill prepared for the hazards and obstacles that face them.
In order to lower the amount of bike accidents throughout California it is important for both men and women to follow the rules of the road, use proper safety gear, take care of their bicycles, and maintain control of their bikes at all times.
