Neon lighting is popularly used in advertising because of the way it stands out amidst signs and billboards. As the Museum of Neon Art proves, neon is also an artistic medium. It was only a matter of time after neon lighting became popular that the concept would spring up, but the fascinating pieces of artwork that artists have managed to create are astounding.



As the mission statement of the Museum of Neon Art (MONA) states, the museum's purpose is to highlight works made using electric and kinetic media as well as to preserve notable neon signs. The result is an experience that needs to be seen to be believed. As of April 2008, the Museum moved from its old location on Olympic Blvd to a larger space on 4th Street in downtown Los Angeles, which is all the more appealing.

The world's only museum of its kind, MONA has contributed to an art form that is accomplishing widespread acceptance from individual artists to academic curricula alike. Having existed from 1981 until today, MONA has put together a large collection of neon works, ranging from vivid street signs to elaborate artworks created under the careful guidance of a neon art teacher.

Because of the nature of neon, the permanent collection maintains a delightful variety. Restored vintage neon signs sit alongside neon wall sculptures and mixed media works. The museum also provides a weekly tour called the Neon Cruise that takes you around to some of the more vivid neon sites in the city. This takes place on Saturday nights from June to October so be aware.

All in all, the Museum of Neon Art is much more fascinating than it actually sounds. Although the warm, mesmerizing glow of neon is mostly associated with gaudy signs and sleazy motels, the Museum of Neon Art explores its artistic applications to great effect.
