While using a plunge base router it is the sole of the base which is placed on the face of the work with the cutting bit raised above the work and thereafter the motor starts working and the cutter is lowered into the work. In case of a fixed based router the cut depth is set before the tool is turned on, after that the sole plate is either rested flat on the work section overhanging the edge so that the cutting bit is not contacting the work, or else the sole plate can be placed at an angle with the bit above the work and after this process the bit is rocked.
