[C1089]Cost Of Cloth Diapers
by Brad Robinson, Bra
I have a one year old child, Kristine. My wife and I are often in arguments whether to use disposable diapers with her or not. I go for the disposable stuff because for me they are convenient and regularly available in the nearby pharmacy. Concerned with the situation, I go over the Internet and researched about it. Much to my dismay, my wife had been right.

There are actually six reasons I learned why cloth diapers are better for my Kristine than disposable diapers:

1. Disposable diapers are made with the super absorbent chemical called sodium polyacrylate, which absorbs and holds fluids in the diaper. This chemical has been linked to toxic shock syndrome. Another chemical concern is Dioxin. Experts have found traces of the carcinogen Dioxin in disposable diapers.

2. Cloth diapers reduce risk of diaper rash because baby rash is rarely a problem when using cloth diapers. As disposable diapers have superior absorbent chemicals, parents may perceive their baby as not being wet. As a result, changing of baby diapers will occur less often.

3. Today's cloth baby diapers are made of several layers of 100% soft cotton flannelette. Many parents are choosing 100% cotton for their baby's clothing as natural cotton fibers feel much better. The 100% cotton is also cooler and more natural to your skin, especially on sensitive body parts. Unlike disposable diapers, cloth child diapers stay cool even on the hottest summer day.

4. Cloth diapers are better for the environment since they are reusable. A good quality cloth diaper can be laundered at least 100 times. If you have plans to have more babies, these can be utilized for your second and third child. It does entail extra effort to clean the baby diaper, but the extra effort used is no lesser than what a disposable diaper does to the environment. It is calculated that a disposable diaper will decay 400 to 500 years in our landfills. Establishments producing today's disposable diapers utilizes one million metric tons of wood pulp and 75,000 metric tons of plastic each year.

5. Modern cloth diapers have snap or Velcro closures, and adjust for the size of your baby. Things will be simpler for anyone who changes the baby when you use the all-in-one cloth diaper.

6. The current cloth diapers are usually all-in-one diapers which have a built in waterproof outer cover meaning that there is no need for a diaper cover.

With our precious babies, we should always consider the impact that the diapers we choose for our baby have on the health and comfort of our baby, the positive impact that we can choose to have on the environment, and the substantial savings available through the use of child diapers made from cloth.

There are plenty of reasons to consider other options to disposable diapers.
But the most significant features are the monetary and environmental benefits. At the beginning of doing the research on cloth diapers, some might be stunned at the retail price of quality cloth diapers. Prices up to $20 per cloth diaper is not unusual. Every baby requires at least 10 to 20 cloth diapers to head off the need to do too many loads of laundry each week. The cost at first can as much as $400. Nevertheless, it is the only expenditure for 3 to 4 years as the cloth diapers are can be used again and again and made into any size for babies from 7 to 35 pounds.
Cloth Diaper Savings
What would be the cost benefit? First, lets think about the expense of disposable diapers: The average infant will need about eight diapers each day which will cost $0.30 for each disposable diaper. At this rate, the price of disposable diapers comes to $875 over twelve months. If you multiply that amount of money by the amount of years a baby usually needs diapers (let's say 3 years), you'll find that you will have to spend over $2,600 on disposable diapers!
No, now consider the expense of cloth diapers: The expense for 20, reusable cloth diapers is only $400. That's all there is to it. But there is also an added price of washing cloth diapers. Washing costs about $1.50 per wash and you'll do about 3 loads per week or less which calculates to $235 per year x 3 years = $705. So your total cost for cloth diapers over three years is $1105.
Compare these two choices over a period of three years:
Disposable diapers: $2,625.00
Cloth Diapers: $1,105.00
Savings from cloth diapers: $1,520
==========================
Savings per year: $506.00
Saving $506.00 each year by using cloth diapers is just the start. There are also, significant ecological advantages.
Environmental Factors
* On average, a baby will use up between 8,000 and 10,000 disposable diapers before it has outgrown the diapering phase, adding a substantial volume of garbage to landfills.
* Disposable diapers are not an eco friendly product, taking at least 500 years for the diaper to disintegrate if left uncovered and exposed to sunlight. However, if they are covered in the landfill by other garbage, they will never disintegrate.
* Disposable diapers invariably get dumped in landfills even though dumping feces in a landfill is against the law. Disposable diapers that contain solid human waste leak viruses like polio and others into the groundwater supply instead of being taken care of at a sewage treatment facility.
* Dioxins produced by the chlorinated plastics used in disposable diapers, have been associated with liver disease, immune system depression, birth defects, cancer and genetic problems in laboratory animals.
Families can both economize on diapers as well as contribute to conserving environment if they look for alternatives as disposable diapers are both expensive and hazardous to baby's health as well as to environment. The cloth diaper option will save families money and help save the Earth.
