[S346]Seven Deadly Sins Origin
by Amy Cox, Amy

Building a Site Low in Content

This is a common mistake businesses make. Content is important in internet marketing, and without great content on a site, there is little internet marketing can do to help.

Internet marketing can only go so far if the website is weak. Businesses must have a strong website that other sites will link to. If a site is weak, it will not get the exposure it needs.

In order to get great content on a site, businesses can include a blog with interesting and helpful information, as well as useful articles. If they build the blog and article directory on a regular basis, they will soon have a site with great content.

Making Promises You Can't Follow Through On

The internet has allowed for advertising without censorship. The online community is a Wild West of sorts, and because of that, many businesses forget to have integrity with advertising. While it is often enticing to make false promises in the hopes of getting customers, that is not the way to start a business relationship. Also, it is not the way to gain a strong customer base. The online business world survives on referrals. If you are making promises you cannot follow through on, you will not get the referrals you need to stay in business.

While there are a lot of companies that operate without integrity, most companies make such promises without having ill intentions. They want to stand out, so they make bold statements. Look at your advertising and make sure you can follow through on every promise.

Failing to Research Keywords

Keywords are essential to a powerful online marketing team, and yet most companies do not spend the time needed to get the proper keywords. There are several things you can do in order to get the right keywords. Start by brainstorming. What keywords are your clients most likely to type into a search when looking for a company like yours?

Then, find out how often people type those keywords into a web search. Use a keyword tool in order to find out how many times keywords are searched each month. That way, you will be able to pick popular keywords.

After you have picked some keywords, open up a search engine and type them in to see how many websites come up with those keywords. Once you type in the keyword, see how many results come up. If too many pages come up you will need to come up with a variation of the phrase. For example, if you picked a keyword that has five million pages come up when it is typed in, your word is too broad. You need to come up with a more specific phrase. You need to play around with phrases until you come up with a phrase that has manageable results. Remember, you are going to be competing with the pages that come up in the search engine results.

Trying to Get Results too Quickly

This is the most common mistake people make, and it is also the most damaging. Many times, people think they can get results immediately with online marketing. Because of that, they don't build a solid marketing plan.

In order to achieve long lasting results with internet marketing, you must understand it is a process. The process will not happen overnight. Instead, it takes months of hard work in order to get strong results. If you try to rush the process, you will not be able to reach your long term goals because you will not have a thorough marketing plan in place.

Internet marketing is very important for businesses of all sizes. A strong website and marketing plan can bring businesses to the next level. It is important to avoid the mistakes of internet marketing so companies can get the positive exposure they need.

Face it. There are tons of websites out there but very few that actually pull their weight and get results. Effective website design is not easy. If it was, every business that put up a website would realize enormous success. It takes many different skill sets to pull together a killer website.

That being said, here is a list of website design sins for your edification. Consider these deeply and I highly recommend you make sure your website doesn’t commit them.

Website Sin # 1 – Website does not have a crystal clear objective. Why do you have or want to have a website in the first place? What do you want it to do for your business?

Website Sin #2 – No clear call to action. This sin dovetails on the previous one. Once you are clear on your website’s objective, make it real clear to your visitor what action you want them to take. Clearly spell it out. Trust me, leave no room for interpretation.

Website Sin #3 – Website does not have a means to capture visitor’s contact information. You are missing a tremendous opportunity to gather prospects who are clearly interested in what you have to offer – hence qualified prospects to market to going forward. Do whatever it takes here. Offer what we call an “ethical bribe" in exchange for their contact information.

Website Sin #4 – Website doesn’t give visitors a reason to come back. Unless your website is a one-time sales website, you must keep it chock full of new and great content to keep it producing for you.

Website Sin #5 – Website has no substance, all style. Dovetailing on the previous sin, focus should be more on adding valuable content as opposed to having flashy animations. Flashy animations may wow your visitors once (if you’re lucky), but great content starts building a relationship or dare I say a dependency on you. Bottom line you’re adding value to your prospects.

Website Sin #6 - Website has an “it’s all about me" mentality. Keep the copy conversational in tone and focus clearly on what’s in it for your visitor. Make them feel that it’s all about them – make them feel special.

Website Sin #7 - Website is inconsistent with your “Brand". Your website does not have to be the best looking site out there. It is far more critical to be consistent (same overall look, feel and design as your other marketing materials).

These next three sins are absolutely inexcusable and should not require much explanation. Nothing will frustrate your visitor more and detract from your credibility faster.

Website Sin #8 – Poor or inconsistent navigation. Don’t make people think. Make it real easy for visitors to find what they are looking for.

Website Sin #9 – Dead links. This is a credibility killer. Always do what you say you’re going to do. It is amazing what people can read into a dead link – the worst being that you simply don’t care enough about you visitor.

Website Sin #10 – Slow website. I know, it’s hard to believe but not everyone is using high speed broadband Internet connections yet. A little compassion here goes a long way.
