[S1230]Symptoms Of Toxic Mold
by Alan Haburchak, Ala
Mold can grow in many places, but is mostly in its element in humid and wet environments. It can come in the form of many colors and often be smelly such as with a soil odor. Mold can be caused by many things, such as leaky plumbing or doors and windows, wet carpet, damp walls, etc. But mold can cause many dangerous and adverse health effects on people.

Since some molds, especially toxic mold or toxigenic mold, cause illness in some people, the permanent elimination--also called decontamination, remediation, and abatement--of toxic mold is essential since the mold may grow back. Products that have mold contamination must also be destroyed.

Mold can sometimes be easily removed with soap and water, or with a surface cleansing product or bleach, just ensure that the products are not full-strength to avoid discoloration. Unfortunately, absorbent or porous materials like ceiling tiles, drywall, and carpet may have to be thrown away if they become moldy because the mold cannot be removed from materials. Alternatively, a professional who has experience in cleaning mold in buildings and homes can be hired. Be sure to check for licensing, certification, and/or experience and training before hiring a mold professional. It is important to properly clean and dry the mold-infected area as an allergic reaction can occur from parts of the dead mold. A continued source of moisture can also cause the reoccurrance of mold contamination; therefore, do not keep humidity levels high in a home/office/etc., repair sources of water damage, and exhaust bathrooms and kitchens.

Toxic Mold and Pesticides

The public should be warned, though, that manufacturers of all pesticide products--products that claim to control fungus and toxic molds--are required to register their product with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). It is imporant that products with claims in preventing or repelling mold are EPA registered under the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act. Products that are rid areas of disease-causing microorganisms, such as mold, must be tested and determined safe as well as effective by a manufacturer prior to being marketed. Manurfacturers are required to list the EPA registration number on the product label, so it becomes easier for individuals to find safe mold removal products. The public should be wary of any product claiming to control fungus and toxic molds that do not bear an EPA registration number since the product may not be safe or effective to use.

You might have been wondering what all the ruckus has been about mold in the home. Mold has always been around and it might wonder why it has suddenly become to topic of so much concern and conversation. The answer is simply really, it can kill you. Well, it could if you happen to be severely allergic to it and are exposed to it long enough. Actually, many people are allergic to mold and it can cause all sorts of allergic reactions to it. Dying from mold exposure is really quite rare, but it has been known to happen.

The most common health altering hazards of mold are the allergic reactions. You might get sneezing, watery eyes, scratchy or sore throat, headaches and breathing difficulty similar to asthma. Sometimes people can have some of these symptoms and never really make the connection to mold in their home. If you have recently moved to a new place and suddenly start experiencing some of these things, you should check to see if there is mold anywhere in the house.

When a home stays very humid it can be perfect for mold growth. If you notice a damp feel in your house or live in a humid climate, you could easily have mold. Dehumidifiers in a house can help eliminate some of the humidity and help reduce the risk of mold developing. Making sure you have exhaust fans in the kitchen and any bathrooms in the home is necessary in every house. These fans help pull excess moisture from the air while you are cooking or showering.

Making sure that there are no plumbing leaks in the home is a wise thing. Leaks that go undetected long enough and come in contact with wood, sheetrock, or other materials will make a good food source for mold and it will continue to spread as long as the conditions are right. When mold starts spreading behind walls and underneath floors is when you can really run into some costly home repairs to have it eliminated.

Amy time you find mold growing on a surface you need to know why it started and fix the problem. Basements and crawl spaces are notorious for mold because they can be damp, dark, and humid. You might have a hard time eliminating the moisture in these places, but it needs to be done. A professional water damage company can come out and check for you and help you fix the problem causing mold if they find any.
