You must be strong-willed enough to be able to ignore the remarks from others who think that a man who chooses a mail order bride must not be able to get a woman any other way. And sadly, yes, there are people who think that way.
There are others who may be derisive about your bride, suggesting that she's only in it for the money, or to gain citizenship in a Western country. There are opinions out there that are not very pretty when it comes to topic of mail order brides, and the two of you must be committed to stand together against them.
No one wants to go into a marriage considering the possibilities of divorce, but the reality is that divorce sometimes happens. It should be decided ahead of time what the plan of action would be if you or your mail order bride becomes unhappy and wants to end the marriage.
Are you willing to provide transportation home or will she be on her own to get there the best way she can? Suppose she chooses to stay in your country, will you offer support until she gets established with a place to live and a job?
Many men choose a mail order bride thinking they will get a more ‘traditional' wife, one who is content to stay home and take care of him and perhaps have children. Many mail order brides come from countries where that is still the norm, but you need to spend some time getting to know her to find out if that's what she wants too.
Another consideration is whether you'll be able to send her home to see her family from time to time, or bring her family to see her. It would be unfair and unreasonable to think she should sacrifice ever seeing her family again just to become your wife.
Once you've met a foreign woman you're seriously interested in, you'll probably be expected to visit her in her country and meet her family. Many young women from countries popular for mail order brides do not make the decision to marry alone. The family often has a great deal of influence over whether or not you'll be granted permission to marry their daughter and whisk her off halfway around the world.
Then there are the legal issues to be considered. When you bring a foreigner into the United States, for instance, you're accepting responsibility as their sponsor and the US government requires you to sign papers stating that.
It's called an affidavit of support, and it obligates you to support your spouse and any children she has. This official form was created to keep any children from becoming wards of the state should the marriage fail.
The fine print says that you pledge your support and it's very specific about the only ways that support can be ended. Generally it boils down to five reasons, your death or the death of your spouse, if she becomes a US citizen, if she works in this country for at least 10 years, or if she permanently leaves the US.
So before you take on the responsibility of a mail order bride, just be prepared to accept that responsibility. The good news is that most marriages between men and their mail order brides last longer and are generally happier than those in traditional marriages.
